Nop, Mp7-preset. I´ve forgotten that.

Ok so that preset was on the Minipops I guess, it was just never mentioned in the talk about what the MP7 was used for.

Regarding EQ4, this is all i can get out and the original snare does -not- fit (so i didn´t included it).

If some interest is given, i´ll do a complete Version of this song. It was only a short realtime-recording.

Yup, i meant Mp7-preset on the Mp7 itself. Where else? If it would be on another machine, then it would be a program.....

Sry if i must say this and Ppl, don´t take it personal, but slowly it tends overall to a *bit* sick discussion....

No chance! Oxygene 2/4/Equi5 & Co is Mp7 with Smallstone, but not Equi4!

Stef
Totally agree. The snare sounds more like the EKO than anything else and so does the hihats. If the Minipops is used on EQ4 then it's for that clicking sound. Bassdrum, neither Minipops or EKO.

Francis must have missunderstood or the Geiss Rhythmi Computer is more advanced than we could have guessed.

Well... I've put on my bad shoes again and I started solering wires loose inside the MP7. The aim is to get all sounds seperate and at least 128 samples of them.

I've worked a bit more on the cover... I missed something... then I knew... the sequence ;)

Here's the result so far. I'm NOT going to cover the whole song it's more for reference. The drumkit is still MP7 BD and the rest EKO. Sequence = timeWarp2600 too... The only FX used are the EMT250, phase switch and dual delay.

As for the MP7 snare not to be the one... I have to agree there. There are 2 kinds of sounds that can be used as snare a short one and a long one. Both don't fit no matter what I pitch or filter. However playtime with the MP7 is not over yet ;)

Ppl please: don't start a YES it is a <fill in brand/type> or NO discussion. That's pointless. The aim here is to proove with sounds yes or no... as simple as that. In the mean time we should have fun trying to crack this mistery....

I also came up with a different idea: It's done on the 2600 or AKS/VCS3 or any other synth he had in those days: It's not a drum box at all...

@PHASEREFFECT: nice track ;)

Now you make it sound like I was stupid 8) Ofcourse a preset from MP7, it is so limited that you cannot use presets for the unit. I was just not sure if it was the minipops or the rythmcomputer. Anyway my questions is answered.

I don't think that Geiss Rhythmi Computer is a MP7 modified but rather a self-made rhythmic sequencer with some analog sounds and external control for triggering other devices such like MP7 customised, CR-78, KR-55, ARP 2600, etc ...
It can be also be synchronised with Matrisequencer 250.

So, maybe Equinoxe 4 uses several drumboxes (eg : Geiss Rhythmi Computer -> CR-78; MP7 )

When I will have opportunity to ask Michel Geiss I will question him about his drumbox.

I have absolutely no idea what the Rhytmicomputer can be. A programable MP7 is one of the options... Geiss is the only one that knows for sure. I really hope he wants to share it with us (seen the recent history).

As for the MP7 research... here is v6.0: click me

The sequencer was wrong in the previous version. In this version it's better however some notes in the second musical sentence are still wrong. (Try to spot them!). On the mp3 the general sound is darker then I have here on my phones (but that's mp3 in general). I did some rework on the EQ's... BD is still MP7... so there are now 2 MP7 sounds in this version. The rest is still EKO.

The clave is a single sound sample from the MP7 (yes I desoldered some wires). I know it's possible to tune the original MP7 sound but I refuge to do that... soldering wires is one thing but I'm terribly afraid when it comes to turning the variable resistor back to it's original position it will become a nightmare. So I detuned it in Halion. Downside is the click you hear on the sound also detunes...

As for Equi4 in general:

It's quite clear the Matrisequencer was used. Also he did have a nice filterbank and he used it on allmost all sounds you hear in Equi4... I'm thinking to do the same but I'm not sure wich one he used... EMS?

As for the lead string... wow... or he terribly dentuned his Eminent... or used 2 to get a symphonic effect or he used a second machine and overlayed the eminent. You can hear some modulation that sounds like the stringensemble but I havn't tried that out yet. My guess is he overlayed it with the 2600 routed through the eminent stringensemble. Remember the 2600 is duophonic and I always believed (before I had the 2600) he used that for all duophonic parts in oxy/equi....

So far...

i think that he used revox for recording. the signal was delayed on second channel about 3.2-3.5 sec to get this effect

btw. i still don't underestand how he created that rhytm... weird... we need to ask geiss :D

The revox can be used for delay yes. If he had variable speed the revox could also be used for detune. This would imply he had to dub his recordings.

Usually one put a neverending tape on the revox and use it only for delay.

Listen closely to the original. You can hear the string starts in the right channel... that is dark in colour... then that same sound is delayed to the left approx 1/8th bar. In the center you hear brighter strings but they fade in! instead of 1/8th bar delay.

In order to do it all with one eminent you need to have 2 sources or split the delayed channel into filtered and just high for the center (that's where the filterbank comes in). I used this method on the recording you can find above (v6). I had to filter a lot in order to achieve roughly the same sound. But it is not *the* sound... so that's why my remarks about another machine doing the high strings or a dub with the eminent etc... there are many possibilities to do it. I just need to find the right one...
