Have you tested some of it? btw I have never really found a decent free SysEx manager for the Nord.

I'm growing to like this synth a lot day by day,Ten years ago I owned the Original Lead, and didn't really take to it much, although it was a Very easy synth to program,I found the sound rather harsh and grungy, but at the time this was the first VA I had used and pretty much up until 1997 When I first bought the Nord,I had been using Romplers for nearly a decade and so was used to the typical sound of a Workstation.

I bought the Nord on reccomendation of a friend, but felt after a while it didn't fit in with my Musical output at the time, this kind of put me off it when the JP8000 Came along as it had a more smoother and warming sound that I liked,I ditched the Nord and traded it in for the JP8080 rack when it came out, since then I have never been bothered with the Nord Synths and pretty much steered away from them ever since.

I bought this Mark 1 again recently, mainly as a project to repair it cos it was cheap(£75)and maybe sell it on for a small profit,I've had to buy and solder a few new Leds and spend some time cleaning and servicing it but,I hate seeing synthesizers go to ruin and had to save it,even if I never really had a Liking for them since I owned one.

I've repaired it and give it a new lease of life and been playing around with it since,I guess that your ears and tastes change over the years,as I have taken to the Nord sound second time around,I actually forgot how great it was to program,I guess over the past however many years that many synth manufacturers have swamped there VA synth patches with fx to make them glossy, yet the Nord Mk1 has none,in comparison to many of the VA I have its Quite a Beefy sound without any Gimmicks of FX to make it sound larger than it is,the Nord doesn't hide behind a mask of tricks it is exactly what it is a true VA Synthesizer
most of the time when I record stuff I turn the fx off and just treat the raw sound once its mixed,But on many synths once you turn off the FX its Quite a boring sound, the Nord sort of removes that gloss and sounds Quite nice(If a little harsh on some leads)For the time Being I shall Keep the Nord, and intergrate it into my Songs,If it doesn't work out then I'll move on.

The Nords Quite a Breath of fresh air in the synth world and I can see now why it was so popular(MK2 at least),at the time I owned the MK1 in 1997 I never really got the concept of the Clavia VA world,I don't think I was Quite ready to embrace it until the JP came along,by this time I had fell out of love with the Nords,I find now the Nords are more true to a real analog synthesizer replication, its more of a raw sound thats capable of some interesting sounds, you need to look beyond what it can't do in comparison to other VA like the JP and An1x or Virus TI,and see it what it does have to offer, infact if you take all the efx off those other VA you hear that the Nord is Quite large and doesn't need those fx anyway, and you can certainly see that in the way they have been so popular against all those other VA alternatives over the last 10 years or so,I'm now interested in seeing what the MK3 has to offer over the Previous Lead Models..

Im glad to hear that 8) Personally I prefer the Nord for analog replication mainly because I can easily pull out the sound I want. When I work on the SH201 and the Microkorg, I always turn back to the Nord as I didn't get the sound I want. Maybe my skills are not decent enough to program any synth I want, but I still get the result I want on the Nord in the end most of the time.
The layout was the mainreason why I fell in love with the Nords, they are so basic and vintage like that all tweakings are pretty fast. This synth is screaming for making leads but I have also managed to get some nice and usefull basses that makes the house into an earthquake, eventhough many people say it isn't too good for basses.
I'd like to test either the mk1 or mk2 as they are said to be even grunchier than my 2x. The mk1 is said to be the most raw of them all, so you must be well suited with it 8)

It has some good basses on it,infact thats one of the areas I have been interested in on the Nord, the only decent synth I have been able to coax some convincing Bass Timbres out of without having to compensate with EQ and compression is the Andromeda, flicking through some of the Nord Presets its capable of some thundering basses, bearing in mind its a raw sound without Modulation like Most VA it makes some convincing Bass tones.

I always test a VA synth on how well it can replicate a couple of Jarre sound,a few sounds I can recreate off the top of my head like the Oxygene 2 Lead and a few other sounds,so I always dial in these when I test out a New VA,that way I can familarise myself with its abilities, the Nord replicated them Quite well so it sort of started me off with how much further I can push it,I've never compared the MK1 to the others as I stated earlier I was put off the Nords before so knowing that the 2,3 2x versions were based on the same machine only with Improvements,I walked on by,Reading the stats the 2 only simply added a further Oscillator choice and more polyphony over the Mk1 so your pretty much in the same territory with the sound wise with the MK1,

I'll post a few samples of the Audio of the Mk1 so you can hear some of the presets(Although I think the Mark 1 and 2 have the same presets???Not sure ???) so you've maybe got the sounds off the Mark1 in your version perhaps??

The mk2 has more memory than the first as far as I know. the mk1, 2 and 2x are said to be more or less identical (talking about the sound character here), except for the difference in polyphony and a few functions added on the 2 and 2x. The 2x has "24 bit DACs running at 96kHz" whatever that means, it make the sound smoother and less raw, however it doesn't change the fact that it still sounds very raw.
As I said in another topic, the mk3 is different from the rest of the Lead series, basically because it wasn't built of the same foundation as the others. A new team of engineers was making it. It's a Nord but doesn't have the same sound character as the past models. I cannot personally clearify this as I haven't played the mk3, but I trust what other Nordlead owners say in this case, as they all say the same as being owners of both the mk3 and one of the other models.

Im excited to hear some demos of the mk1. Ofcourse I tried some JMJ patches originally made for the MK1 on my 2x, and I don't hear any difference. The Oxygene 11 sequence was faithfully remaked with the FM modulatoin etc.

I'm also very interested to know the differences between the mk3 and mk1/2 - as it's said to be different.

I love the looks of the 3, and the sound of the 1/2/2x. The looks of those have no appeal to me at all :P

Why does it matter how a synth looks? Are you gonna have sex with it? :P :punch:

Looks are important on a synthesizer although its secondary to how it sounds, the chances are that if something Looks good it more than likely makes it sound better to us initially because of our Psychoanalysis of that first impression, and that influences your Judgment,it just feels more comfortable to play a synthesizer that Looks nice as well and sounds good.

Would Reason be as pleasing to use if it had a shit GUI??and didn't display those Rack Modules in a uniform manner in an aesthetic way, personally this sort of thing is bought on its looks and style more than the sounds,it certainly influenced my decision to buy it,I have a studio full of more than capable synths, yet the sound of Reason is wimpy in comparison to all the synths I had,it was the way it interacted and looked that took my fancy not the sound

I've never bought a Hardware synth based on Looks alone, but it does have an influence on you...

I for one don't like the Look of the Radias synth, its not a typical synthesizer construction but love the sound,as much as I would like to have one I think its not an eye pleasing synth, but I'm sure that if I bought one I would get used to the Look and warm to it eventually.

Firstly... relax, it was a joke. You guys react as if I insulted your mums. Of course it's nice if a synth looks cool, etc., but it's secondary. If you refrain from buying a good sounding synth, just because you don't like its looks, then you're having a problem. :P

Secondly... a synthesizer is a tool, not a piece of furniture. :P

Thirdly... Jakob, the synths in Reason ain't ugly. I'm sure the only reason you don't like 'em is because you can't cuddle with 'em. :P

A synth is a furniture IMO and I wouldn't buy the best sounding synth if it was damn ugly, call me weird but thats my opinion :)

Now back ONTOPIC!

A nice track by Dan Lind done with the Nord Lead 3:

I tryed that once. . . . . . . . . limped for a week

I too have always liked the Nords. I prefere the MKII to the MKI for looks. For some reason the MKI looks like its been dropped on its end corner panel. But then thats what makes it stand out from the crowd.
