Hi

I have a question. How can you send sysx patches from your computer to your D50 via Sonar 4. They say on the net it's possible but how does it work??

thx

You have better install D50VE, it's easier and it works ;)

Have you set the midi channels right? If the D50 is the only synth connected to your PC, set the send channel to 1 on the computer and the receive channel to 1 on the D50, although I expect it to accept sysex on any particular channel, so you may as well set it to ALL, if this is a possibility. I don't remember. Just try a few times.

Now it really worked. The error was just a mistake. It works. It's nice. I like it. My very own synthesizer.

Sorry to bring up this topic again, but now as Im a D-50 owner I would like some of the JMJ presets, or I have them but Im an ass to transfer SysEx between the computer and a synth. Therefor I have a noob question. I have the d50vebeta1_1 manager but I have no idea how to install it. I have to unzip the file but then I just get a lot of files that seems to be rather unuseable. Do I need to run it via a softwaresequencer program?

Just run the file,it should install ok I ran virus checker over it when I d/Load it was clean, just run the file then open the program, from where it was unzipped to,If I recall you get those warnings about it being or might be unusable but just run it anyway..its perfectly fine and should work once you've installed.

Its a standalone application so you don't need to run it via a host, just make sure you set the Midi In and out to your Interface ports on your soundcard etc and make sure you have both the In and Out plugged into the D50,you need to have then both plugged for handshake purposes the D50 doesn't handle sys exclusive too well, especially at the rates that the data is sent fro ma computer, and it may not work properly for every patch you load, you may need to reload some patches once or twice before the D50 will take the data.

And make sure that once you have dumped a patch to the Synth to write it into that location(Store) on the D50 before you switch patches on the synth or you'll lose the data and have to reload it,the patch is only stored in a temporary buffer until you store it in a Location, which you will have to physically do on the synth after dumping it if you want to keep the patch in memory.

I think that Sound Diver is best option. Hav a look! Manager editor patch storage in one! For ALL SYNTHS!!

Of course nothing goes like a knife in warm butter. I am using the free Virtual Editor. I have turned off the memory protection, then I push the DATA TRANSFER and choose B.Load as I want to transfer patches from my computer to the D-50, then it says "Are you sure? ... (Enter/Exit)" I push the enter button and then it just says "waiting ." Then I load a patch to the editor and it asks if I want to transfer the patch to the D-50 but I get the MIDI Communication Error. I have read that this easily happens and that there can be many reasons for saying so. The Midi channel of the D-50 is 1 but I don't know how to change it on my computer, if that is the problem at all :nico:

EDIT: Hmm it seems to work now anyway.

On the D50 editor...

To set up the Midi in and outs, goto "Tools" menu click "Midi Devices" set the In and out ports to which your Midi interface is and your D50 is hooked up to,(This should be the port to which your soundcards Midi ins/Outs are connected)

Then click on the "Keyboard" Icon(Next to the Midi socket icon),then set the "Midi Base Channel" to match the Synths global midi channel(Which in your case is channel 1).

then load in the Sys ex data into the editor and ,choose "Send to D50",as I said you may have to use the send to D50 once or twice to get the patch in,this depends on the Patch settings and how much data is in the sys ex string ,some patches will maybe load ok whilst some need 2 tries.....

You don't need to use the Bulk Load option on the D50,thats only when your receiving a complete bulk dump of patches, this doesn't always work anyway, the D50 is rather flaky with handling Large sys ex messages

just use the send patch to synth on the editor,as I said it may not always work first time for every patch because of how the Data is transfered, the D50 doesn't handle Sys exclusive very well as its a pretty slow synth in comparison to how todays machines handle data so the computer sends the Data at a much faster rate than the D50 can handle, because its a Roland device its needs a checksum calculation transfer with the Message if the D50 doesn't receive this checksum it will ignore the message(Patch data)Being sent, hence why you may have to send it a couple of time, the checksum is just a Code so that the D50 knows that the message is intended for this particular synth, its a kind of safety way,so that it doesn't recieve a message not intended for this synth.thats why you need both the In and out connected to the synth even though your only using the Out to send the Patch data, the message is sent via the Out and the D50 then sends a further message back to the software in to clarify to the editor that the synth is connected, this all happens in literally Milliseconds, but because the D50 doesn't communicate as fast as a Pc of today it may not relay that Handshake message back in time for the editor to confirm the synth is the d50 and hence why the patch may not get loaded first time

Yes it never worked first time the data was sent. It seems to work easy now. Thanks for helping with this.
