I usually don't promote plugins but this one looks quite interesting for some of you!

For those that don't have the space for a real 310 or just want to carry one in their laptop:
"Virtual String Machine" 2.5GB of samplez in a nice gui.



They state that JMJ used the Rhapsody in Equinoxe however I did find an old pic of the Equi studio that has a.... Rhapsody....so... Hmmmmmmm... who knows

I'm most interested in the Freeman String Symphonizer (War of The Worlds).

We have to wait some time since it's not available (yet).

2,5 Gb for string synths sounds? That's insane...

How many Terabytes would those people need to sample a glockenspiel?

2.5Gb of sample data isn't that much really (dependant on how many different string machines they sampled),when you sample a string machine especially say like the Eminent,in order to replicate it authentically,you'd need to sample every note,sampling just one note per octave wouldn't replicate it realistically,the Eminent has a constant rate to the LFO,which is the same speed across the octaves,conventionally sampling it would cause those cyclic movements to speed up across an octave to which a Key was sampled from(the same thing that would happen if you samped a voice,the higher up the keyboard the sample would speed up etc)...so it needs to be sampled over every note to catch that Constant cyclic movement.it would be impossible to compress a Replication of every note into small amounts of Memory(Even in mono)not too mention making those samples loop correctly and smoothly without glitches,I suspect thats why the amount of Sample data is so large...

Well maybe it's true... But all those Gigabites of samples often make me think of all the Megapixels you find in digital cameras (even the crappiest ones) people use to watch their pictures on the TV.

I'm sure some people get fooled by this: "wow 2.500 Gigabites of samples for a piano, it must be the best piano sound in the world!"

Those figures are for Spec reasons only,most people don't give that so much as a thought when they use it...2.5 Gb may sound a lot,but its only impressive if it sounds as good as it appears on paper

The same with TV's,nobody watches the TV with the older generation in mind,they just switch on there "MegaBlasterSuperUberHDTVwith fastext Nicamdolbydigitalsurroundsound whistles and bells" without so much as a single thought about how Its evolved from your bog Standard Black and white with 4 channels and no remote control.And Besides in a few years time People will wonder what the fuss was about with the HD era..

I can recall the days of the Atari/ZX Spectrum/BBC Acorns and commodore 64's Amigas etc.and those were hig spec machines in their day...Now look at the spec of a Standard PC!!!the Atari may be limited in heavyweight memory terms but it knocks the spots off any Pc for Midi timing,but many people don't look at it like that,it seems wimpy on Paper in parallel to a PC with 2Gb of Ram as standard...whereas the most you could get for an Atari is a 16Mb upgrade with the Falcon...
