I'll try my usual cars comparision:

Yamaha sounds neutral, natural and truthfull - Porsche.
Roland sounds warm, sweet and creamy - Ferrari.
Korg sounds fatt, raw and brutal - Lamborghini.

I tend to prefer Korg for electronic effects, arpeggious and sci-fi audio.
I tend to prefer Yamaha for natural sounds, honesty and realism.
I tend to prefer Roland for pads, fantasy environments and atmospheres.

You can make them all sound almost the same though, with clever programming, I'm just generalizing here.

yes, my bud Peter still wants his CMI to become mine, and I'm about halfway thru to get it.

Jesus, well I have 3 of the first Electribes, the microKorg and the Legacy Pack, so I guess that's 5 pieces of hardware.

I love Roland for two things, the TB303 (so then the MC09, I love this little box for £80) and the V-Drums (they're just simply great!)

The Alesis Ion beats all my other synths though.

My most recent aquisition was a Yamaha Ys100, because it was supposed to be my first synth ever in 1991. I hesitated too long and gone it was. I bought an Akai AX73 synth instead (one of the best buys I ever made). But I remembered the sounds of the YS100, rather warm sounding (brass, bass and strings) and now I have it finally, and enjoying it very much, programming seems limited, but you have to read between the lines to get it singing

Korg has, since they released the Polysix in 1981, overall a bad position in the mid-end/high-end market, their equipment is more or less "beginner"/"low-end" and is very far common (forget sentences like "rare MS-20", that is a contradiction in itself; only because EBay offers few, it does not have to mean inevitable, that -really- few exist of them). But that was the way, which KORG wanted to go and now you can see, that they sale (since the release their DSP-driven Synths) less and less. Roland invented far more in his life-time, Roland has it´s fingers into more subsidiaries (BOSS, AMDEK, EDIROL, RHODES), Roland offers a larger product variety, and, to be honest, Roland-Synths sounds overall far better (excluded the Korg-synths<1980). korg is a company, which takes care of a new technology, if it already became outdated. I have nothing against Korg (out of 17 devices i have four of them), but it is not any longer my choice (as i´ve sayed, except a PS/MS/VP)

Didn't Korg hit it big with the M1 and Wavestation around the early nineties? Every self respecting group had one, same goes for music studios. It's maybe even safe to say that (with mentioned synths) they produced the DX7 of the nineties, as in most used recognizable patches, even up to this date, even up to the point that it makes me yawn when I hear yet another M1 loop in the background of a tv program or documentary. But I find it hard to believe that Korg as a synth producing brand ever fell from grace in the professional world, period.

I got my Roland SH-7 today. And it was not the synth I had hoped for. It is in really bad shape (I knew it was not in mint condition). The sound is thin and completley unlike the SH-5 which is fat and a really good subbass synth. Oh well, I guess it will be a "fix & sell" synth.

M1 sold over 250,000 Units,best selling synth ever...I would expect the Korg Triton to be close on its heels...
Wavestation has only sold 14,000 units so no where near as sucessful,but its still a classic,the M1 was hugely succesful because it combined great sounds with an 8 track sequencer with FX too,thats why it superceded the D-50 when it was released,I still have my Old M1....dated in terms of sounds now,but you can still here that classic Piano sound in a lot of tracks still these days,you can pick them up very cheap too,now the Software version is availible

Korg Workstations always set the standards,the Triton/studio/classic/Extreme is to the music world now what the M1 was back in 88,
with e OASYS Korg are firmly in Pole position of the Music workstation world

Email Korg and ask them to send you a sales unit figures for there Equipment or look in synth literature like Keyfax...

There has never been a Synth that has outstripped the M1 in units bought in Rolands Catalogue!!!!!this went out of production in 93/4 so Roland have had plenty of time to make an impact...but where are there in sales unit figures????To date only the D-50 has come a mere close second to that figure with 200,000 units

Korg improve on technology and that whats makes them so popular,250,000 M1 sales 100,000 01w sales,130,000 Trinity sales 185,000 and still counting Triton sales,hardly a low end share of the market really is it!!!!

Any manufacturer looks to past ventures for inspiration,we still have many manufactrers still basing there presets on Moogs/Arp etc,because thats what people demand,between an MS20 and 2000 is 25+ years and digital components,ok its old technology,but not every other Korg synth is a clone of the past designs,simply living off past glories,they produce innovative new instruments.

My opinion is not a reason to insult me, my friend! Generally i don´t like DSP-driven Synthesizers, whether called Triton/MS2000/Radias or Linux-based machines like the OASYS. According to my opinion it is not art to program different modules into a DSP and then to say: "We invented somewhat new ", only because the DSP´s are getting faster and faster to allow more complex sound structures and more polyphony!! I´m -very- sorry that i don´t own a music store, where i´m able to buy each month a Korg/whatever at purchase price and test each function/sound of their devices. I can say from my side: I´ve owned the MS2000 (which uses the concept of the 1st series flop-OASYS), DSS-1 (where Roland also released in 1986, the S-10 and the S-50-Series, the DSS was -not- the only "Home"-Sampler on the market at this time), two Polysix, the Poly-800 and one EX-8000 and noone of them didn´t convinced me at all! Nowadays one can take a PC with Linux and some Softsynths and is thereby (both concerning the price and from the possibilities seen) probably still better served as with a DSP/"Linux-Synthesizer"! And that not since yesterday! And not everyone has the complete KORG product line at home, only because the own purse is too fat and must be emptied somehow! There are also enough roland/korg devices, which sounds sh*t/incompatible among themselves.

I´ve seen with the eyes of a "normal consumer":
- Oasys (PCI) 1st generation: Flop
- Oasys 2nd Generation: Way too expensive
- MS2000 : Flop (in order to use the remainders, came the MicroKorg on the market)
- Legacy Pack: Flop (even the &#8364;199-"sell-out" offers are not sold)

About the M1-"impact": Roland built the JW-50, -i- don´t know why it wasn´t sucessfull (maybe it´s like Windows<=>Linux, as it seems is something automatically good, because it is used by much People)


Do what you want, call me stupid, improbably, crazy or whatever else ( as long as you have fun to do so), but i don´t buy anymore something from KORG. I find the concept, to plug the ulta-possible into a crate, simply only sick (in this connection however nearly all possible manufacturers give themselves "the handle to the hand"). And that i´m not able to buy a OASYS/whatever must be also clear.

BTW: From where do the sale values come from? From KORG itself?
