Keyborad or Synthesizer?

I know there is a difference between those two, but for you nerds out there who love to play synthesizers, where is the line for you when a synth is too easy and have too less buttons to be a synth and turns out to just be a keyboard who is electrical and looks like and sounds somewhat like an analouge Piano?

The difference between a synth and a keyboard is: A keyboard uses preset samples, par example of a piano or a flute, guitar or organ. With a synth you design a completely new sound, you develop it like you want it.
The way between them is a workstation, a keyboard and a synth in one. In short...

We want synths because they have that typically undefinable sound. And that's the sound we looooove.

Well, imagine that Roland released XV-5080 (sound module) with keys (let's say... 76). You can't create sounds, you just have plenty of high quality multisamples. Would you call it a keyboard or synth?

You forgot a point I think, a keyboard has inbuilt speakers ;)
And synthesizers are looking better, it is not made for the same sort of persons ;)

That's not completely true, Nico! There are keyboards without speakers, and there are synthesizers with! But indeed, not very much.

A keyboard - to me - has this particular auto-accompaniment section: hit a chord and you don't have to play any longer :P Only you have to do is hit '11' for 'Tuba' and you can toss around with the melody. It also has those built-in speakers and usually looks a bit toyish. You can not edit sounds on them.

Cause that's what Synthesizer means: to synthesize a sound, to shape a sound. That's not what those kiddo-keyboards are for...

I remember an old friend of mine having a Roland synth years ago with built in speakers. I think it was the version that came out alongside the 106 from the mid 80s.

Thats the one. He offered it me in the very early 90s when he wanted to sell it and I turned it down (foolish me)
