There's only one problem: Supernova keys are very difficult to get! My local music dealer doesn't sell them anymore, and I don't see them often on the internet!

They went out of production about 3 years ago,and most people opted for the Rack version of the SN synth,you'll be very hard pressed to find a Supernova in the keyboard version,They only sold about 5,000 K/B units worldwide.(with 500 models a silver limited edition)..you also have to consider that the Novas has so much more to offer in polyphony stakes and Multitibralism agaisnt things like the JP8K/MS2K/An1x/Nord leads/ION.so they tend to hold values and also reasons to keep hold of one
Almost every pro end studio will have a Supernova gracing there racks,so it shows its status and importance really.

...You can also look at the Novation KS5,these are pretty much the same as the SN with a little cut down on some features,but still as hands on and superb....


they do come up for sale from time to time but also tend to go quickly also,and most people do seem to keep hold of their keyboard version...
with the Nords,these are also becoming scarce especially the Mark 1 which has almost become Extinct in secondhand circles,the Mark 2 is the preffered Flavour of the nords,but the Mark 3 is still being made and adds so much more over the previous models..sadly why they decided to cut off an octave for the Mark 3 is beyond me!!!prices are a little hig for the Mk3 given the slowdown in VA in the last 2 years....
you could always give the Korg Z1 or prophecy a look as well,very powerful synths...

I wasn't a pro and I didn't have a lot of time, I only listened to the presets and they were rather good.
Anyway, I prefer the sound of the Alesis ION

The presets are pretty bad compared to the potential of this synth,if Novation had of used better programmers they could of made this synth shine,instead they fill it with shitty trance leads and dance arps which pretty much put people off,when i bought mine i was impressed by how much hands on control it had and how easy it was to navigate round everything,so i dialled up a blank location and edited in the usual way,was mighty impressed by how easy it was to coax some familiar timbres from it,so had to buy it...More or less used on every track I've written since owning it...

With the KS though you'd think that the front panel covers pretty much every function like with most VA synth,but you'd be mislead there is so much more power inside the menus to cram onto the front panel,you'd be very shocked at what its capable of,for about 6 months or so after buying it I had never bothered with all the hidden sub menus due to the front panel providing pretty much everything i needed,but i was blown away by how much more i could manipulate once i learnt all the functions in the sub menus...a Wolf in sheeps clothing IMA

Anyone into VA would be a fool to not have at least a SN or K station in their setup

Indeed, maybe the ks5 is an option. They are still available! But the offer of synths is soooooooooooooo big...
Now I also get other synths in my head... But still the nova's are the best IMO!

Thats the trouble too many choices!!!!!

I've been through a lot of different synths over the years used and abused them and then sold on the ones i think are no good for my setup.

You could own every synth going and still not be totally happy,something else will always catch your eye...

thankfully I'm old enough and wise enough now to know exactly what i need and if something will be of benefit for my music.


KS5/KS4 are no longer made its only the KS Rack thats still availible from retailers,but i think even those are just stock models,its the same synth just minus the keyboard..
plenty of secondhand KS4/5 availible theres always some on Ebay...

Ahem... €7.599 for the 88 keys version... But with all that choice, there MUST be a perfect synth for me yet, or am I wrong? I didn't find it yet, or it's always another synth.

The OASYS has had a price drop in the last 6 months give it another year and the price will be almost halved,then I'll get one,as it stands the Oasys has nothing over what i dont already own from Korg anyway.so unless they dramatically improve the Sequencer to maybe run software applications like Cubase or more VST hosts then i can live without it for the time being,the sequencer is nothing more than a Triton which for a synth of its price is pretty diobolical,thats not to say the triton seq is crap,Its just for the price the sequencer is a Joke on the Oasys.it would be nice to have a PC style sequencer host given its large LCD and maybe an option to plug a mouse into the rear panel for easier editing(Touchscreens are good,but can be limiting too)

until they upgrade the pentium cpu to allow intergration of third party software i dont see the point in having one the only incentive to buy one is to have my studio in one box which would be more convenient.but for a few £K its not justifiable to have a little more luxury unless i can integrate the PC sequencing/editing/VSts into it..


Thats why i love the Openlabs Neko workstation...if only Korg would make the Oasys like this,I would simply sell everything hardware i own and buy one now...
