If they ever made a JMJ biopic, I would assume that they'd only cover his life from when he started out in The Dustbins up until around maybe Destination Docklands or Oxygene in Moscow. I say this based on my watching of A Complete Unknown from a year or two ago, as from what I remember they never show you what Bob Dylan got up to in his later years after he visits Woody Guthrie for the last time and instead opts to just tell you in text format before rolling the credits.

I think it would be good to explore the relationship between him and Charlotte Rampling after his rise to fame, but I'd also be quite happy if they explored his work with GΓ©rard Lenorman that later became the basis for Second / Third Rendez-Vous. But above all else, I would absolutely LOVE to see them re-create the concerts for the big screen (since it's probably the closest we'll ever get to seeing them in true 4K UHD!)

I also think that "Conductor of the Masses" would be a suitable name for the movie, it'd be a really nice thing to put in for the fans since (I assume) it's the most well-know fan magazine in the community, right? ;)

Interesting posts, almost fitting for a separate topic πŸ˜€

The Springsteen biopic focuses on one specific part of his life (recording of the Nebraska album) whereas the Queen biopic does a whole retelling or rather rewriting of the band's history. I think the Dylan biopic also focuses on a part in his career (haven't seen it myself)?

I think JMJ's story would fall in the latter category, hopefully without much rewriting of the facts. It's good to have an idea for a story, a reason to make such a movie (apart from money), and you don't want to make it too much of a wikipedia movie.

Like you said Aqanique, if you start with the Dustbins and end with Houston, the main line of the story would be his drive to create multimedia spectacles. That would give a nice recurring theme. The title Conductor of the Masses would then be a perfect fitting title (and yes, that's also the title of a brilliant fanzine).

My only worry if they did make a biopic would be that the studio or director would make it more of a "Best of Jean-Michel Jarre" compilation for some quick cash from more casual fans rather than an actual deep insight into his life, creative process and achievements.

It would definitely be good for a hypothetical JMJ biopic to only focus on a small part of his life rather than his entire history, since I think that was a big problem for the Queen biopic and a reason why they were changing so many historical details, to make it easier to fit more parts in and for plot convenience.

I'd say that if they do end up making it, they should 100% follow the Dylan structure. The movie didn't start with him at the top of his career and then cut to him just starting out, it shows you all the hardships he went through before his breakout into stardom in order, which I think a lot of biopics seem to do away with these days to make a quick buck.

If it was me making the movie, for the concerts I would consider maybe trying to focus on a different theme for each one and connect them together somehow:
  • β€’ Place de la Concorde: The realisation of how famous he's become in the span of 4 years (after releasing Oxygene & Equinoxe), the urge to want to go bigger and how the stardom affects his relationship with Charlotte Rampling.

β€’ The Concerts in China: How the work ethic and unity of the Chinese people affects Jarre's own mindset towards future albums and concerts, and how his music and outgoing personality affected the people of China during his visit. Maybe focus on him going out and meeting the Chinese people to learn more about their culture to show how compassionate and humble he is, even after the unexpected fame.

β€’ Rendez-Vous Houston: A focus on how the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster and the death of Ron McNair affected Jarre mentally during the build-up of the concert. You could probably make Houston the biggest focus of the movie and dedicate more time to it. Maybe start off with his reluctance to do the concert and show him slowly warming up to the idea and skyline, then him becoming friends with McNair and how close they become through the idea of playing "Last Rendez-Vous" live, then shift to a focus of loss and grief and how those emotions ended up fueling his motivation to go through with the event.
I'm not sure if doing something like that would make a good watch since it's just a hypothetical way on how they could deal with the different concert scenes, but I'm pretty sure they'll go no further than 1997, since the only real significant event held shortly after that time period was The Millennium Concert (sorry Rendez-Vous '98!), and I don't think biopics tend to go too far into the present day (so anything from 2001 onwards).

It helps that the Dylan biopic was directed by a competent director who made Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (which I love) the year before and Walk The Line, the Johnny Cash biopic which also focuses on one thing in his career.

Now that you bring up directors... who would be a good director for something like this? Apart from the aforementioned James Mangold of course. πŸ€”

Jean-Pierre Jeunet, he did the Zoolook video before πŸ˜‰ nah, would probably too weird. But also very French, so that would make sense.

Maybe we should consider Mike Mansfield in that case! Could you imagine an entire biopic movie filmed in the style of Destination Docklands? The visual effects and cuts every five seconds would be a nightmare for me...
