Jean-Michel Jarre & Armin van Buuren drop anticipated collab ‘EPICA MAXIMA’

Armin van Buuren added, “Jean-Michel Jarre is one of the most influential figures in the history of electronic music. He introduced electronic sounds to a vast audience and delivered legendary concerts. His albums were a significant part of my childhood, and I vividly remember my father listening to ‘Zoolook,’ ‘Oxygène,’ ‘The Concerts In China,’ and more. Additionally, Jean-Michel Jarre has recently collaborated with Renault to develop unique sounds for the car manufacturer’s upcoming electric vehicles, drawing inspiration from tracks on “OXYMORE.” As part of this collaboration, a new version of the legendary track “Oxygène 4” has been created, merging with the original “EPICA” from “OXYMORE.” This new version will soon be available for commercial release.

after a few comparisons, I vastly prefer the video version.

Same, the only exception for me being the "chorus/middle-eight" part which has two "key changes" in the album version (at 3:01-3:21) whereas in the same section on the video version there's only one.

(If only my music terminology was better to explain this )

But other than that, I like the video better since it uses more elements from the original track (also from Brutalism, I think)

Their previous collaboration, ‘Stardust‘, was the most popular track from Jarre’s 2015 album Electronica, having been streamed well over eight million times to date. ‘EPICA MAXIMA’ transcends the boundaries of genres, fusing Jarre’s expansive sonic landscapes with Armin’s euphoric and uplifting Trance vibes. It is not just a rework; it’s a breathtaking transformation of Jarre’s original track. The synergy of their unique yet complimentary styles creates a sonic, stadium-ready masterpiece. “EPICA MAXIMA": what is the collaboration of Jean-Michel Jarre and Armin van Buuren worth?

New on the side of one of the pioneers of French electronic music: Jean-Michel Jarre collaborates once again with Armin van Buuren for the title "EPICA MAXIMA". This one is taken from its nine-titles, released on November 3 and entitled OXYMOREWORKS, which contains exclusively collaborations, from Brian Eno to Irène Drésel. But what is it worth?

This is definitely not the time for Jean-Michel Jarre to hang up. Since he has just released OXYMOREWORKS, a record of nine titles that contains only collaborations and from which "EPICA MAXIMA" is extracted. This song is therefore a new collaboration with the Dutch trance music legend Armin van Buuren, with whom he had already worked on "Stardust" in 2015. Not so far away in terms of the symbiosis of the styles of what was "Stardust", the two pillars of electronic music definitely do a good job together. Nevertheless, it takes several listenings to succeed in really immersing yourself in the special universe of the two DJs. On the other hand, "EPICA MAXIMA" is listened to more easily than its predecessor: it is slower and more techno. We are very quickly caught by the rolling bass line and this jerky vocal-cut.

This new collaboration between Armin and Jean-Michel is therefore extracted from this new record released by the Frenchman on November 3 - and which undoubtedly recalls Electronica I and II, which each brought together many artists such as Jeff Mills, Sébastien Tellier, Boys Noize, M83 or Laurie Anderson. This time, it was alongside Brian Eno, Martin Gore (Depeche Mode), Nina Kraviz, French 79 or Irène Drésel that he chose to surround himself. The musical dialogues - as Jarre himself says, - operated between Eno and him on the title "EPICA EXTENSION", then with Adiescar Chase (among others at the origin of the soundtrack of the Heartsopper series) on the title "Synthy Sister Take 2" with a nice orchestral work or the hypnotising "Zeitgeist Botanica", in duet with Irène Drésel have been able to hang our ears. So there are a handful of nuggets on OXYMOREWORKS that prove that Jean-Michel Jarre has even more than one trick in his bag.
