Jean-Michel Jarre: a new revolution with Oxymore

A special feature in the November Rolling Stone
Rolling Stone invites you to dive deeper into the Oxymore album with number 147.

"In real life, stereo does not exist, our audio field is 360 degrees," explains Jean-Michel Jarre . “Today, technology allows us to explore composition in spatial audio and this opens up a whole new experience for us musicians in the creative process. Music will be more easily felt by anyone with ordinary headphones, or new generations of sound systems, offering a more physical and natural way to listen to sound and therefore music in total immersion.”

Jarre's 22nd studio LP and tribute te musique concrète pioneer Pierre Henry.

Conceived as an "immersive work", with multi-channel 3-D binaural sound, Oxymore is quite some distance from where Jarre fast started his
career, as a twenty-something musical prodigy with a head full of incredibly melodic music. If the average home hi-fi kit is not going to come close to replicating the 360-degree sound, these's still fun to be found in the Jarre metaverse. Melodies and musical tricks cut through a dense mesh of found sound, skittering electronic beats and shuddering synths. Sex In The Machine approches the sort of big beats that defined '90s dance music. Animal Genesis is an eerie experimentation with half-heard sounds flying across the audio field, while Brutalism in a chugging, glowering piece of music, populated by electronic albums reminiscent of the alien-speak of the heptapods In the film Arrival. A sonic aventure best enjoyed solo with very good headphones

“Technology always precedes art”
Jean-Michel Jarre is a musician and pioneer of electronic music
For his new album "Oxymore" he wants to make his music tangible with his own virtual reality world

Going back from Berlin now. That was fun, listening to Oxymore in Dolby Atmos. I turned my head to listen to where the sounds came from, that was fun to do. I was sitting next to Jote, who we finally met after some 20 years online :-D

It was loud though. As if the 3D wasn't enough, our chairs were trembling of the bass as a 4D experience. And the tracks don't seem to be continuous, but they fade out... That worries me.

Thank you to the people organizing this whole thing and making it possible for us to be there!

Not continous? That's pity. :S

Yeah, this could either be because it was streaming off Apple Music's Atmos mix or the CD itself has also been transformed into separate tracks with fade outs (as Jote said before)... Not too happy with that.

Most of official track durations are 2 seconds longer compared to the concert. The last track isn't. That's pretty much a dead giveaway there are 2-second fadeouts now on CD.

Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention: JMJ was there too, obviously :-) He basically said the same things we know from the recent interviews that have been posted here. One interesting tidbit: probably 5% of the album is Pierre Henry's stuff. There are tracks that don't even contain Henry's work. He explains: "but it's all in the vein of Henry. If I didn't have his sounds I couldn't have made this."

It was nice to meet you Dr. Jones and Jote, after reading your comments here over the years. Hope you had a good trip back. Listening to the album was indeed a "physical" experience. Very intense bass... ;-) And it was really interesting to hear the sounds "wandering" around. Well, musically you have to get used to it. It's not a "typical" Jarre album. Or as another fan said: "There's a lack of melodies". And yes, as Dr. Jones said, the fade outs were disruptive.
When we arrived, Jean-Michel was already inside the cinema, doing soundcheck. During the talk (after the album presentation) the lights were very low. So it was difficult to take good photos...
Jean-Michel also said, that he absolutely didn't have "Oxygene" in mind when doing "Oxymore". The only thing that could be compared was, that he wanted to do something completely new in both cases. And he confirmed that there will be a remix by Brian Eno.
