I think JMJ is right about the big manufacturers of digital gimmicks and softwares, the big dragons has vacuumed the market for artists and are not leaving behind as much profit shares as perhaps they ought to sadly enough. Great that he does speak out. Should have a decent impact as it's coming from him.

No I still think he looks alright for his age even without girly makeup.

This time he has a bad hairdresser or he can not decide whether they should look brown or gray. If he decide for grey, he must cut it very short to lose the dark hair, but now it Looks strange . He looks in this pictures, such as crawled out of the hedge, so unkempt. This is very different than two years ago.
I hope he will get his back his lovely hairstyle he had the last years.

Jean Michel Jarre wants $400 of your new iPhone for his pocket

Musician Jean Michel Jarre has lashed out at tech companies for devaluing music and other media, suggesting that $300-400 of the sticker price of every smartphone sold should be handed straight over to content creators. Dismissing the tech segment as "manufacturers of computers or cables" who "created a monster", Jarre argued that the world had become too focused on the delivery medium and not the content itself, and that while consumers shouldn't necessarily pay for music, phone makers should shoulder the burden instead.

"We should never forget that in the smartphone, the smart part is us creators" Jarre pointed out to the Guardian, before launching into his manifesto of how he and other artists should get paid. According to the Frenchman, who came to fame in the mid-70s for his unusual electronic instruments like the laser harp, phone manufacturers are pocketing too much from each sale.

"If you get rid of music, images, videos, words and literature from the smartphone, you just have a simple phone that would be worth $50" he calculates. "Okay, let's accept that there’s a lot of innovation in the smartphone, so let's add $100 for this innovation – the remaining $300-$400 of the price should go to [the creators]."

Key to Jarre's logic is the fact that, for the consumer, the pay-out should be no different from what it is today. The artist sees free content as an inevitability, but envisages a model similar to how radio play - or, indeed, how Spotify and Pandora pay a per-play fee - leads to royalties.

"We are talking about a business partnership, not a tax, and this shouldn't affect the consumer" Jarre concludes.

Despite the French showman's enthusiasm, smartphone manufacturers are unlikely to adopt his strategy; it's clear from his sums that he hasn't been paying much attention to the latest teardowns to see quite what the bill-of-materials is for the average handset.

Nonetheless, the amount of attention being paid to how content creators are rewarded is increasing: YouTube detailed its payouts earlier this week, while Spotify offered artists an analytics page back in December 2013 so they could estimate their potential earnings from streaming.

I do not understand the article, or I do not understand him.

Why he thinks that the smartphone may cost only 100 euros? And the rest of of music, games, etc. belongs the mental creators ? I pay for my Apps, and I pay for the CD `s I using. With each buying, it is up to the user, where I play the music. If I buy a mediaplayer in Germany (DVD player, computer, TV, CD players and smartphones etc.) then I pay also for a flat-rate fees for GEMA . (GEMA is the same as "CISAC" but in Germany)
If I'm take Images and movies with my Iphone camera, I have to pay any utilization rights. (At most of myself)

To be honest, when it comes to choosing between Jarre's CISAC-shenanigans (cisacnigans?) and Didier Marouani floating in zero-g... well, Didier's got me on this one.

(Then again, I wasn't even aware of a cisac before JMJ got involved and judging by Wikipedia, it's an organization whose president isn't even alive (RIP Robin Gibb))

He probably means a copying levies that needs to be (at least in Germany) paid when buying a device to play protected content . Sure this can also be a Smartphone. Does he mean that, he has formulated it misleading (or I don´t understand because of my poor english )

I guess in other countries, there is not. It seems he is following the German laws and GEMA .
Here you must also pay royalties for for each public event. Each ! For example, the carousel, play music, Music on school events, clubs, etc. The GEMA has greatly increased fees from the beginning this year for clubs and discos. So much , that even the famous Berghain in Berlin wanted to close. The GEMA has sued Youtube, and won in court. Therefore, we can`t see a lot of Youtube Videos here in Germany.
I think with the GEMA he has a strong backing for his ambitions, maybe also from other countrys ?

I was very positive to Jarre's talk at this conference, but if he really said to The Guardian that cell phone manufacturers should pay $300-$400 to artist for each phone they sell, then he's really lost the plot.
