-Soon Jean Michel Jarre will be going to Oslo (Norway) to start projects with Norwegian Royksopp. This sunny afternoon he has arrived back home from Australia, where he has started projects with the country's original inhabitants. All in all I'm staying for about 1 hour in Jean Michel's appartment. This is just an apparment to use over the nights. His real home is at the dashing suburbs west of Paris where I've been visiting one time earlier. There he has got a big old house with a view over the river Seine.
-His mega-concerts are ofcourse a very demanding work. All details has to work and fit together perfectly. But there is one detail wich is Jean Michel's greatest fear. Something that is absolutely not allowed to happen but has happened to him no less then three times. The fact that he is forgetting his pants. One time it happened in Leon infront of the Pope.
He couldn't ofcourse enter the stage with only a pair of worn shorts. A motorcycle courier quickly was sent to his hotel although it was almost impossible to get through the mass of people.
In the very last second he finally came back with Jean Michel's pants.
JMJ laughs and says; "I don't know. On a psychoanalytic point of view what does it mean?"
-With all the crowd records that has been set through the years I wonder if he always are trying to set new records or if it's more like a hard requirement for him?
JMJ: "My big outdoor concerts are not about winning a formula 1 race. I'm not trying to set new records. I have a privilige part in the world of electronic music, I know that. One can never know forsure how many people will come to my outdoor concerts. Also I can't explain my big success through the last 35 years. But I know why I want to give concerts eventhough some musicians, specially within the electronic segment are somewhat critical. Some seem to dislike that I'm aiming for the big mass. Today we're living in a time with computers and mobile cellphones wich means that now perhaps more then ever we are isolated. Few people really cares about their fellow humans. To break this almost total isolation wich can make people feel very bad I want to entice people to come out to a unique concert and let them discover electronic music. At a concert people can record within themselfs their own experiences wich then hopefully will remain for the rest of their lives."
-In his hands JMJ is carefully holding new vinyl album releases of his old albums like Oxygene and Equinoxe and he almost won't let go off them as I'm reaching to touch them.
Jean Michel Jarre continue to speak foundly about the vinyl record;
"The vinyl is a delicate object as a difference to CD or mp3. They defenitely doesn't give you the same feeling. You don't have any affective relation to them. That's precisely what gives you the desire to download music for free on the internet today. A big part of music has lost its value."
JMJ thinks that we are going to learn from the history. Either the vinyl will return back in its old form or in a new form but in a form that will entice people to physically hold a record in their hands again, he says.
-JMJ is one of the oldest teenagers in the world although he became 63 this fall. So how does he keep himself so young for his age?
JMJ: "It's genetic. My parents both became old. Music and not too much sports.
There are athletes everywhere whom goes to their physioterapists with their destroyd bodies. To keep young you should instead read books, watch movies, listen to music
and (with a great grin) have a lot of sex...sex is very important. /quote
