France should have won. I hate it when the game is decided on penalties and no Zizou and Henry to take them. Italy played good the first half but France played excellent in the second half. Shame Zizou could not control his anger on Materazzi whatever hurtful was said and the answer is not to head butt the player. For Zizou (the great maestro of football) to retire from professional football like this is terrible after this incident.

The Italian player touched the French one ("touch" is a delicate word) with his foot in the way it's enough to put somebody "out of rythm" - I hope you know what I mean, I have problems to explain it in English.
As some expert said - it was very "clever" faul and the situation when the arbiters have problem with what to do.

Zidane deserved the red card. No matter what happened, what he did can't be justified. To end his career like that... what an old fool!

If Materazzi said something what hurt Zidane - and I'm nearly sure he did it doesn't justify Zizou (although makes it easier to understand him), but it should make people condemn Italian as well - and now you condemn only Zidane, such as if it was OK to provocate other players by offending them.

I have never hit anybody (I mean hit seriously) but I'm rather a "hot-blood" person, who sometimes react too fast, although it's word-agression, of course not offending someone's family or things like that, I hate such methods, butin some situations it is better not to argue, as there are people who just can't understand any arguments.
I can imagine that I could even answer with violence, if it was an extremal situation - everybody has some border of endurance.

What doesn't make me thinking that's the worst thing Zidane could have done.

By the way - I read that his agent said Zinedine is going to explain what happened between him and Materazzi next week. He said also that he's very sad and disappointed by how he finished his career.

According to the informations from Fench group SOS Racism, Italian called him "dirty terrorist" (Materazzi denied it saying that...he even doesn't know what the word "terrosit" does mean...hmm), I also heard second version, telling that he offended Zidane's mother and said something bad about his origin.

But these're just rumours...

After all, he won the prize of best player, so, I would say it is a fine way to finish his career. 5 years from now no one will remember what he made as an important thing.

Oh - I agree with Ronja completely, I think Zizou has a good explanation for his behaviour. And I could react the same if they would insult me (taking that's the reason of Zizou's assault...)
Thing is - Zidane's reaction was visible, Materazzi's provocation will remain unknown for ever probably. I don't think he will ever admit what he said/did. So I wouldn't say Zidane is the bad guy, who knows what Materazzi said....?

ROME, July 11 (Reuters) - France has complained to World Cup winner Italy about a right-wing senator's racist comments that the defeated French team was made up of "blacks, Muslims and communists", the Italian media reported on Tuesday.

Racism has already threatened to cloud Italy's victory, with reports that Italian defender Marco Materazzi provoked French star Zinedine Zidane, the son of Algerian immigrants, by calling him a "terrorist". Materazzi denies making such comments.

There was no such denial from Roberto Calderoli of the Northern League, who lost a ministerial post in a centre-right government earlier this year for wearing a T-shirt with cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad offensive to Muslims.

As the victorious Azzurri returned to a heroes' welcome in Rome on Monday, Calderoli celebrated it as a "political victory" over a mixed-race French team.

Italy had "beat a team which, in the quest for results, sacrificed its own identity by selecting blacks, Muslims and communists", the senator said, in comments that were rejected by members of Italy's new centre-left coalition government.

Italian newspapers La Stampa and Corriere della Sera quoted a letter of protest from French ambassador Yves Aubin de La Messuziere to the Italian Senate, saying: "Such unacceptable and despicable comments can only foment hatred."

"France is proud of a team whose members are all its sons, whatever their origins or religion," he wrote, adding that some of the French players insulted by Calderoli played in Italian teams "where they are very popular".

All sorts of stories are coming out about this incidence.

I will only believe when an official statement is made what actual was said. But whatever it is it still does not excuse Zidane's behaviour.
