3 hours is perfect for a length of a JMJ concert.

JMJ must have had every intention to project images, but changed his mind. Laser lights and images would have been too much together. It would have been one or the other.

I asked Fiona about this, because when some people realized there would be no image projections, they started talking about wanting their ticket money back. Fiona explained that the way the 2009 tour went visually, it was exactly how Jarre designed it to look. What I believe based on comments from JMJ in the media is that he wanted to make the concerts less static and more tangible, and removed the big images to avoid the show looking like all the other shows out there. JMJ also said somewhere that he wanted to have a concert that didnt look like a big TV show. So that's why I believe JMJ went for the lights and lasers, which almost touched the audience physically and immersed them. Whereas big video projections would be something you watch from a distance, and it's the same distance all the time, hence static.

It was that, and of course the way fog, lasers, lights and video dont mix well.

Additionally, JMJ also wanted to use his outdoor experience indoors, and when there was a black background behind the stage with no images on it, I got the feeling that there was endless space behind the stage, i.e. almost like being outdoors but with a roof! To me, the lack of images behind the stage wasnt a lack completely, there was something there in spite of not being there; a sense of space, depth, distance, almost outdoors.

So at the end of the day, I think JMJ had good points in deciding against the video images this time. But, the 2010 version may be different, and I hope he has upgraded with some new types of visuals this time.

Kanta and Glenn are both right. JMJ wanted to have quote "giant images" displayed in the In-doors tour (an idea he quit rather quickly). He mentionned it in the press in December 2008.

The use of the backdrop was indeed more to focus on the music.

Nevertheless, I think static images (i.e. La Défense) are much more powerful than giant animations (i.e. the annoying one at "Once upon a time") and no visuals at all.... But I'll leave JM decide for himself.

There's a middle road; semi-static images where some parts of the image move, and some are static. I recall many of them during the overture in Gdansk. Very stylish, and kinda classic retro feeling meets latest possbilities without going "look what we can do today with the latest fancy computers". Compare that to Aero only 3 years before, where the projections were either completely static (or almost completely static), or cheap computer looking.
