If your proud of what you do,it inevitably will sound good to others,if you hate it ,its because its not finished !!!
I always do several versions of a song and choose the one that I consider to be the best version...
To me the only time I know a song is "Worthy" is at the defininf moment of creation,you can never go back to that feeling no mater how many times you rework it to make it sound pleasing.
As a composer I find if a track gives you that "Hair on the back of the neck stand" up feeling when you create it.then its a good song.
If you try and create something forcibly it will sound crap,there are lots of people who try and force out a great song,by saying they'll sit down and right this or that,but Any composer will tell you the best tracks are the ones that come naturally without too much prethought going into it.most of the best tracks i have written have been played live on a piano or synth with no practical direction of Chord progression other than by Improvisation,I tend to write a chord progression and then build the song around it by playing live dubs into the DAW and then after add melodies/Vocal harmonies and Lyrical parts,I'll then cut and past the best bits after
Then I will work on building the track up in the sequencer/Daw starting with the drums,I always work with each track first from start to finish,before i work on everything else,I work quite efficiently,but will only work on each track at a time,If you try and focus on too much at once you lose balance of everything and tend to lose the edge trying to mix everything to make it work...I always give myself deadlines to finish bits this way I do get things done quicker and more efficiently.
There are songs that i have done,which i thought were good at the time of doing them,but after a while hated them,then gone back to them after a few years of not hearing them and listened again and felt really gobsmacked at how good they were.I Reworked some older demos,due to a friend of mine writing some alternative lyrics for them,she sang the new version and I reworked some of the tracks and added new bits,and was really pleased with the results..
I always beleive that you end up hating your own tracks due to overkill of listening to them,So i try not to overexpose myself to my music other than when I'm in the studio.I do have a seperate room where i write stuff,which is great as i only focus on writing with just a Keyboard and Notepad and not getting bogged down with all the gear,so i now i can go in there and just flow with new ideas
Once I'm out of the studio I tend to not listen to much other music,I kind of see the studio as a workplace rather than as a place of sanctuary,this way i find I put more energy into the music kind of like as if iwas payin to Hire out a commercial studio,the thing with having a Home studio is that you can go in there anytime you like,so you tend to not utlilise the time as if you were paying hundreds for a commercially used studio and that makes people far less inclinded to be efficient and productive...
