OK, it's a JMJ forum... but maybe a few Depeche Mode fans here too? Anyway, thought one or two of you may enjoy an Emulator II demo of library sounds I recently put together.

Sounds great - pity it's so huge... they go for quite reasonable prices these days, but theyre the size of a Suzuki Alto :mrgreen:

I always thought the Drum/Metallic percussion on People are people were samples made by DM themselves,so they used some of the library sounds,I know they were fans of the Later Emax Machines Too,the Choir sound in Enjoy the Silence was from the Emu Library

The Shakuhachi/Flute sound is this the same sound as used by Micheal Cretu(Enigma) on Sadeness??


Its not a bad sounding library for this Machine really,especially for its age and sample rate,thanks for compiling it

...and you are right ! Forgot to mention this exception earlier. If you listen to the original the samples are not that great actually, the bass drum is much flatter than theirs, still nice to tap away though on an EII.

Yep, also by Peter Gabriel on Sledgehammer. There's a few different versions of it in the patch structure. Some with hard attack, some softer etc.

If you ignore the lo-fi 8-bit mono aspect, the quality of the samples and patch structures is amazing. I use it far more than the ESI4000 I also have.

Aye, they're rather big. Difficult to pick up fully working ones too, think you have to be passionate about them to put in the refurb time...

I think it sounds great.
I always wanted to find one at a reasonable price, but I didn't.
Does this library come from a CD-ROM or from floppies? Did you add the Reverb effect to the People are People drums or are they sampled with effect ?

I struggle myself, having to sit cross-legged to use it. This and reaching across to the Mac to load sounds fair makes the muscles ache after a while....

Cheers Pete (& Radek). They do come up on Ebay every now and again but usaully not working, as mine was when I picked it up. Some DIY refurb of my own and finishing touches by Synth Repair Services got it tip top.

The sounds are a mixture from the Emu & OMI CD libraries (CD3 being the Northstar collection) all in Sound Designer (for EII) format, loaded by the Mac. The People are People drums are sampled from this:



When doing a direct comparison they're not as good (and including the reverb element from the song) but remain recognisable. The bass drum was the worst, nowhere near as good as the original which has more of a metallic sound to it.

Didn't realise how nice this thing sounds. Very powerful sounding and loving those 80s vibes.

Nice demo. The first one, FM guitar or whatever reminds me of the Miami Vice music, but on the other hand, that sort of sounds were common in the 80's.

Being a huge DM fan... many thanks for that! Can't wait for SOTU!

Like others here, I had no idea the People are People intros were presets??? You learn something new on this board every day. Great and still very usable sounds. Hollow Sun released a freepack of sounds for the Fusion that contained EMII and Farlight samples (Shakuhachi, Waterphone, Enjoy the Silence Choir included) many moons ago. Good stuff indeed! Anyone know of sample CD's with the full EMII library???

BTW very impressive row of synths you have there. May I say... Nice Rack! :wink:

Nah, if you mean the drums they're not ! I sampled them from the youtube vid above where the poster sampled them from the song... if you mean the first sound on the demo, it's called Expensive String Synth and it is in the library but isn't identical to the DM sound although very similar.
BTW very impressive row of synths you have there. May I say... Nice Rack! :wink:
