Got myself one of these today....Yamaha EX5R,3U Version of the EX5 Keyboard
I'm quite impressed with it,it has some very nice sounds for a 10+ year old module,I half expected them to sound rather lame and dated,buts it quite a heavyweight and sounds very lush,especially in the SFX and pad department,its Organs are quite gritty too,especially some of the Overdriven/Distortion types and has some nice Guitar patches,Acoustic Pianos aren't up to much,but Romplers have come a long way with PCM data since this Synth made it on the scene,there are a lot of patches in there that I know will come in useful,especially the Pads and AN bass patches/Leads
I've yet to try out the comparison of the AN engine with the AN1X,but its only able to produce Monphonic patches(well can be duophonic dependant on Voice structure)but it sounds very close,will do some A/B comparisions soon,but if its able to produce much of what I programmed into my AN synth I shall transfer the patches over and that will be another synth I can do away with.
As for its VL(acoustic emulation) stuff,perhaps maybe a little old in terms of what we have today,but they are passable and at the time of release I suspect would have been very good,certainly gives the Moss Board or Z1/Prophecy a run for its money.
I will try and do a demo vid of some of its sounds and post it on Youtube,there is very minimal videos showing its full potential(Well they focus on the Keyboard model,which apart from the obvious Keys and controllors is identical to the rack) and most of the demonstrations focus on the EP or organs,which are very good,(has a superb Wurlitzer piano and loads of fender Rhodes stuff which are nice and warm sounding),but none of the vids showcase the rest of the typical synthesizer sounds.
