JD800 vs JP8000

Hi,

What's your choice between a JD800 and a JP8000 and why? If you can found both for the same price?

Besides the very similar names, they are very different. it's more about what you need. The JP is a standard VA synth if you want a synth that covers most areas of subtractive synthesis. It does open for some other interesting sounds with the Super Saw OSC. It also has the feedback OSC, if you can get creative with it.
The JD works a bit different from traditional subractive, however it does allow access to some subtractive like sounds. I don't know much about it, but others on the forum do, so I'll just stop here.
In the end it's also about what kind of synth and sound you need. From what I know I'd say that the JD is for those who want to experience further with other opportunities.

Owning the JP8000 I can tell you this is an awesome synth to have if you really want to learn synthesis, you can do a lot of things with it, from deep bass to weird FX, this "Feedback" waveform is wonderful, you can make excellent soli.
If you want an idea of the sound, check "Rave-O-Lution" and the intro of Magnetic Fields 1, from Moscow concert ;)

For the JD800, for having tried GeeJee's, I can tell you this is a nice synth, I have not been too far into the machine, but you can make awesome guitar-like sounds, great pads !

And to finish, I'm planning to buy a JD990, because I have listened a demo, this sounds amazing, put a Vintage card in it and you are in pads heaven !

Also I have Ch 4 organ sound from Francis Rimbert in my JD 990/w Vintage synth card.

was interested by this myself.

seems that both synths are very very popular among musicians.

I think JD is still wider used. but maybe jsut my thoughts.

Well,

I ask the question because i'm looking for a synth to learn synthesis. A synth who i can access to all parameters...without going in an endless menus on a 2 line matrix display ;) Some models have been proposed to me.

JP 8000
SH 201
Nord Lead 2x
Moog Voyager...

I'm interested by JP8000....

But JD 800 is working with wave table right? there is no really a OSC based oscillator right?

If you want to learn subtractive synthesis then keep away from the JD. JP-8000, SH-201 and the Nordleads are all in the same category, all with the parametres laid out on the frontpanel, so the JP is a fine choise.

It's basically a ROM-based synth with access to all parameters which are laid out in subtractive synthesis style. No real oscs, but samples. Wavetables have nothing to do with this.

Ok, but for me a wavetable is juste a sampled waveform stored in a hardware support. ROM, Flash, etc... JD800 is like a M1 or JV1080... no?

Well, for you it may be, but for the rest of the world, a wavetable is a sequence of samples that flow into each other and can be used as a sound source on some synths.

So you mean like the Korg Wavestation? In the case ok... i think is just a "vocabulary" interpretation... Idea is to sample and store not starting with basic osc...

You will not be able to sample and store your own wavetables unless you buy a Nord Wave ;)

Of course... i'll check my basis on synthesis... i'm working with sample since 1994... i start sampling with Commodore 64! and then amiga 2000... so sampling is not really a secret for me :P

I will give me some time to learn synthesis and work hard arround my synths! ;)
