Equinoxe 4 is the only track that I've heard were Jarre actually use his EKO like it was intended, as a drummachine. Mainly he used it together with sequencers as a start/stop device.

If one wants to hear it in action for real then you have to dig up records with Manuel Göttsching from Ashra or with Stephen Parsick from (/ramp]. These guys owns two of six known units of the EKO in Europe. I've spoke to them all and every machine is still in good health. :)
The EKO Computerhythm was an italian, programmable (the first one!!), custom-made drummachine without trigg, din or any other kind of sync. The first production arrived in 1972, the second in 1974 and the last one in 1978. There was only about 25 machines ever made so it's very rare.

According to Stephen Parsick, Jarre told him that the drums on Equinoxe 5 is the Geiss Rhythmi Computer, which is a programmable Minipops 7. He also confirmed my theory that the EKO is the drums on Equinoxe 4.

btw: I also have samples of the EKO and I don't agree that it's just white and pink noise. Mostly, it sounds like you're hitting a wooden block with a stick. Great kickdrum though. :D

The EKO Computerhythm is my holy graal...but not for $1500-$3000
Jup, i know Stephen from several Email contacts. Ok, so Geiss´machine was a programmable MP7; but EQ5 stlll sounds for me like the usual Mp7 preset (which shouldn´t mean that the preset was not re-programmed). I simply don´t understand why his Mp7 was modified into a programmable device, because all of his Mp7-'Tracks used more or less "presets". Ok, i could do the same with my Mp7 and connect the entire thing to another control electronics; it shoudln´t be that problem (the Mp7 is not that technical high-light, specially the presets done with a diode-matrix), but i don´t see any sense....

Anyway, i didn´t got any Video from the EKO until today, whether from the owner of the pics nor any sound-demos from Stephen...

I also have somewhere the EKO sample pack; the one, which must be re-worked, cause there are some curious "clicks" inside :) But don´t ask me where i´ve put them....i´ll take a look....

Greetings
Stef

AFAIK nobody (except Jarre & Geiss) has seen the Rhythmi Computer in real life and been able to check it out, so we don't know what it contains. It's possible that Geiss might have put in controllers for pitch and decay or something in that way. (Now wouldn't that be something...it would be great in my CR-78 ;) ). It's just a guess of course, but I think it's more to that device than just to programmable bit. :) But still your question is very intresting! I would love to ask Jarre about that myself (and other things about these mystic things that surrounds the recordings of Oxygene and Equinoxe).

I've got my samples from an Akai sample CD. There are four shots from every individual drum except for the triangle. I hate to miss it..and noone with a real EKO can help me (or so they say... )

But, to be in addition, i still say that Equi4 is CR-78. Let me do a example.

And a rather old example (nearly 2 Years) from me using CR78, a Flanger and a Phil Collins Preset.....

It doesn´t matter how the CR78 sounds by -itself-, it depends on how much effects are behind it, and which Trimmers are tweaked on the sound board. You can transform with them the original Kickrum into a TR808-Kickdrum, if you want.

here you can see how it sounds in main mix

Equinoxe 4 cover (excerpt)

the kick comes from cr78 samples, i've made snare and closed hihat sounds on stomper, the bongo comes from minipops [bongo3 sample]

So how can you present the rhythm as "Eko sound" whereas you have used CR-78 samples ?

Toms we hear on Equinoxe 4 extended are also on original version but less audible (I don't know if it is the same instrument behind).

i tought that making such rhytm using only cr78 and minipops is just impossible... there aren't similar sounds as in this rhytm... so i tought it was eko

it's so strange... i need to ask JMJ in june/july when he'll visit poland ;)

Interesting. :)

Why I think the EKO is used as a drummachine on Equinoxe 4 is mainly because of a song by Ashra called "Hausaufgabe". As on most of his songs you can hear the EKO in the background, clicking and zapping and it sounds exactly like the drums on Equinoxe 4.

I would really like to know how and where Jarre actually used the EKO.
It was probably an expensive machine even back then, more expensive that the Minipops 7, so it's strange that Jarre used it very little as a drummachine.

Found this btw...
Oxygene 2/4: Mostly Korg MP-7 Mini Pops. Earlier models (easily distinguishable thanks their champagne-coloured metal cap on the tempo control) feature exactly this rhythm while later models have slightly altered rhythms. There might be some EKO thrown in here, too, but after having listened to one of those old MP-7s I´m not that convinced anymore as I used to be.

Oxygene 5: RMI Harmonic Synthesizer for bass line, "hand-clapping" noise sequence, and occasional odd beeps and boops around the main sequence. I´m not sure if this isn´t an ARP2600 that comes in at the end of the track after that noise burst but it could also be the RMI arpeggiator in "random" mode.

Oxygene 6: Korg MP-7. Those cheesy Guiro and Quijada sounds are something to die for... I did some 15 years ago 8-)

Equinoxe 4: EKO Compute Rhythm. At the end of the track where rhythm and sequencing get more intense you can hear those characteristic CR78 maracas playing trills and offbeats. Jarre used a CR78, I asked him about that. The 12" edit features some (awfully out-of-time) clapping onto Synare 3 drum UFOs. The JHS wasn´t used by Jarre, and the only live video I´ve ever seen of Ultravox´ "Vienna" clearly showed a Synare 3.

Equinoxe 5: Geiss Rhythmicomputer (de facto a gutted MP-7 made programmable in a similar fashion as the EKO). The EKO might show up here, too, but I haven´t been able to spot it.

Equinoxe 6: 2x ARP 2600, controlled by a Matrisequencer. One is doing the bass line, the other one does the s/h stuff. No RMI in here. Not sure about the Oberheim Two Voice.

Equinoxe 7: The "á la Concorde" remix relies heavily on a CR78 as a rhythmic backbone.

Stephen Parsick
