Whaleing

Just had this from Jarrelook
They need our support in this issue:
Hello,
This is Martin and Tracy from Jarrelook. It is not our normal policy to
email anyone on our mailing list with anything other than information about
the band and future gigs however we feel sufficiently angry by a world
situation which has recently come to light that we wish to contact you all
in the hopes that you will help us to prevent it.
Recently at a meeting of the International Whaling Commission a
resolution - the so called St. Kitts and Nevis resolution - has paved the
way for a resumption in commercial whaling. Many species of whales were
hunted almost to extinction before a ban was placed on commercial whaling.
Even though that ban has sat in place for quite some time now many species
of whales are still perilously close to disappearing from our planet
forever such is the slowness of their recovery. What has come to light is
that the campaign appears to be driven by a few corrupt Japanese
nationalist politicians determined to ignore the scientific evidence AND
the wishes of their electorate. In Japan less than 1% of the population
will eat whale meat and more than 70% are actually against the resumption
of whaling. Despite these facts huge amounts of Japanese money is being
used by a small group of morally bankrupt politicians abusing the power of
their position to sanctions bribes to other countries in order to gain the
support Japan needs in their attempts to get the current whaling ban
lifted.
St. Kitts received just under £3 millions.
Palau received £2.7 millions.
Mali and Mongolia which are both landlocked with no access to the sea and
hence no earthly reason for wanting a resumption in whaling have also been
bribed and have backed the proposed resumption. Clearly Japanese Yen in
their pockets means more to them than the survival of some of this world's
most threatened animals.
Even Denmark has joined with the Japanese few on this issue. But with only
5% of their population in favour of a resumption of commercial whaling
shouldn't Prime Minister Rasmussen listen to the wishes of his own
citizens?
All the above facts and figures have come from the August 2006 edition of a
well respected diving journal; they are not something we have invented.
So what can you do?
Well... for starters you can email a letter expressing your disgust and
contempt for the proposal to resume whaling in the strongest possible terms
to the following email addresses:
rop.president@palaunet.com - President Remengesau of Palau.
minister@stkittstourism.kn - Richard Skerrit, St. Kitts Minister of
Tourism.
stm@stm.dk - Prime Minister Rasmussen of Denmark.
And you can also send on this letter to your circle of friends in the hopes
that they too will respond and further circulate the email resulting in a
veritable deluge of emails from concerned individuals who do not wish to
lose one of this earths precious species for ever due to the selfish and
immoral conduct of a corrupt minority.
Thank you for your time and support.
You may wish to cut and paste the letter we have sent, the text of which is
below.
With all our best wishes,
Martin and Tracy F
