Combo player broke yesterday, looking for replacement recommendations?

Hello! 
It looks like our family's combo player finally gave out on us and broke after 35 years of being in our house, great news for me seeing as I was planning on buying some new LPs this week.
Anyways, we've decided that we want to get rid of the thing and get an upgrade that can play both LPs and CDs, as well as some new speakers to go with it. I don't know much about what's considered "good gear" in terms of players and speakers, so I thought I'd try on here to see if anyone could give me some recommendations. I've already done some Google searches and been pointed towards the "Mixx Analog+", but I was just wondering if there were cheaper options that offer the same quality.
(If anyone's interested, the current sound system we have is an AKAI AC-M55.)
