France recognized electronic music as intangible cultural heritage: what is it about?
The country incorporated La French Touch and its legacy into its Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
For years it was synonymous with night party, underground clubs and prejudiced looks. Today, electronic music took a historic leap in France: the government officially recognized it as intangible cultural heritage, placing it at the level of the traditions that define the identity of the country.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, and marks a before and after for a genre that was born on the margins and ended up conquering stages, festivals and audiences around the world. The inclusion in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage legitimizes its artistic, social and cultural value.
A recognition that goes beyond music
The decision equates electronics with other French historical cultural expressions and recognizes the key role of clubs, festivals, DJs and producers who shaped the local scene. In particular, the French Touch stands out, the movement that since the 1990s projected France as the global power of electronic sound.
French Touch: a sound that conquered the world
The French Touch is not just a musical style: it is an internationally recognized cultural brand. Artists such as Daft Punk, Justice, Air, Phoenix, M83 and Jean-Michel Jarre became ambassadors of a sound that mixed electronics, pop and experimentation.
Jarre, pioneer of the genre since the 1970s and UNESCO ambassador since 1993, was a key figure in this history. His album Oxygène is considered a founding work and a starting point for the global expansion of French electronics.
