A cultural weekend dedicated to artificial intelligence

With AI profoundly transforming the culture and media sectors, this event will raise public awareness of the issues it raises.

Ahead of the Summit for Action on Artificial Intelligence (AI) which will be held at the Grand Palais in Paris (8th arrondissement) on February 10 and 11, 2025, the Ministry of Culture has decided to organize a “weekend cultural” dedicated to the impacts of AI on contemporary creation. Having, according to the Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, “the ambition to highlight, to a wide audience, the opportunities that artificial intelligence offers to creators”, without avoiding “the challenges and risks facing the cultural sectors are faced today, with the aim of helping to shape the creation of tomorrow", this free event will offer a very varied program.

On February 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (François Mitterrand site), the public will be able to attend workshops, installations, demonstrations as well as round tables, in the presence of composer Jean Michel Jarre, the general director of SACD, Pascal Rogard, the general director of SACEM, Cécile Rap Veber, and the deputy editorial director of Arte, Gilles Freissinier. The “Cartooning for Peace” exhibition, initiated by the association of press cartoonists, will explore the major issues of artificial intelligence using press cartoons from around the world. Finally, from 9 p.m., the evening will be dedicated to cinematographic creation with AI, in partnership with mk2.

The day of February 9 (10 a.m.-6 p.m.) will revolve around “Machina Sapiens”, a unique exhibition presented at La Conciergerie allowing you to discover around twenty original works by French and international artists (Mario Klingemnann, Adam Harvey, Émilie Brout, Justine Emard, Albertine Meunier, Maxime Marion, Gregory Chatonsky…) who question AI. Three themes will be addressed: “recognition”, “the AI ​​system” and “Dreams and recombinations”. Master classes will also take place in the afternoon.

What is the situation? How to protect copyright?

T.C.: Copyright protection and fair remuneration for artists are the pillars on which the integrity of the creative industry is based. Faced with the emergence of AI, it is crucial to adapt our regulatory framework with agility and foresight. We need to design an ecosystem where human creativity is valued and protected, while embracing the possibilities offered by AI. At BMG, we invest in state-of-the-art technology to detect copyright infringement. This mission requires close collaboration between regulators, the arts community, and businesses to develop equitable and sustainable solutions.

J.M.J.: The advent of AI confronts us with a major challenge: preserving our cultural sovereignty in the face of algorithms that are mostly designed according to an Anglo-Saxon vision. It is imperative that we join forces – artists, entrepreneurs, scientists – to shape an AI that reflects the diversity of our cultures and values. This technology requires collective thinking and unprecedented collaboration to create a level playing field, where human creativity flourishes in harmony with technological innovation.

Human creativity is the foundation of generative AI, and without our works, the American and Chinese giants of industry are not at all of the same value. It is therefore absurd that they are valued at billions without any consideration for the rights of creators, whose losses are estimated at $22 billion in five years.

France and Europe have a dual mission: to develop our AI ecosystem and to establish fair rules for remuneration and intellectual property protection. These rules guarantee freedom, as the driving licence is for traffic. France, a pioneer in the protection of creators, has always had a global ripple effect.

We, French and Europeans, peoples of explorers and inventors, must now turn into Corsairs 3.0, taking to the sea to counter the pirates who covet our treasures.
