I do know what you mean, and I too find the AI thing rather uninspiring right now.
However, JMJ has a 'brand' that revolves around using the latest technology at any given point in time. In the 1970s, that was analogue electronic instruments. In the 1980s, that was digital and computers and by the 1990s, a blend of both. And in late 1990s and 2000s, he dabbled with primitive apps like ArKaos and the use of 3-D glasses. With AI, he's just grabbing the latest thing and trying to work with it. Just like he’s doing with his VR concerts and the EōN app.
None of this is particularly ground-breaking but I would rather this version of JMJ than his career moves in 2023 being a complete nostalgia fest. His return to Oxygene and Equinoxe with Oxygene 3/Trilogy (2016) and Equinoxe Infinity (2018) was just about acceptable as it did freshen things up, but without too much time looking backwards. But it was risky, and I would still prefer it if he left both brands well alone. I was never a fan of Oxygene 7-13 and I rarely listen to that album. I consider Oxygene 11 and Oxygene 12 to be two of his weakest ever tracks. Just sort of tacked on the end, with no real part to play in the overall experience.
What I am really interested in though is a further instalment of Electronica 3 and how he might present himself live in 2024. I really hope next year’s live shows are a move forward from the solo DJ-style Notre Dame and Élysée Palace shows. I want to see something that’s raw, live and includes a ‘tribe’ of performers alongside him on stage.
