Oxymore, an immersive musical work premiered for the Hyper Weekend Festival.

A pioneer of acousmatic art, Pierre Henry bequeathed a series of sounds to Jean-Michel Jarre during his lifetime, with the mutual wish to create a collaborative work.

5 years later in 2022, Jean-Michel Jarre pays a strong tribute to the late composer, with a work that finally brings together these two artists who all bring together in their constant search for technology at the service of music, and yet everything differentiates at the level of the fundamental process of composition, opposing concrete and abstract music.

In a musical journey where the unpublished sounds of Pierre Henry dialogue with the new composition of Jean-Michel Jarre in a game of mirrors, the creator of Oxygene finds his inverted doppelganger in Oxymore, opening a vortex that sucks us in a to-and-fro - comes anachronistic where analog and digital find a common playing field.

Not limited to a recorded musical composition, Oxymore is conceived as an immersive work in the innovation studios of Radio France in multi-channel and declined in physical 360 concert, presented in world premiere on the occasion of the Hyper Weekend Festival.

The concert is also offered in real-time social VR, accessible live on all media. The intangible shadow of Pierre Henry hangs over the immersive work, inviting the public to lose themselves in an unexpected acoustic trip worthy of Alice in Wonderland.

Oxymore creates a bridge between the historical sound roots of the House and its most recent innovations. The work establishes a link between the classical / contemporary music department and the current music sector, symbolically marking the launch of a more lasting collaboration between the Maison de la Radio et de la Musique and Jean-Michel Jarre, which will be announced. during his masterclass.

[Interview] Jean-Michel Jarre: “The French elites have missed out on pop culture”

Oxymore is divided into eleven movements, a nod to Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry's first creation of concrete music, Symphony for a Single Man, which was divided into 22 movements. I alternated violent movements and other softer ones. There is a strong link with surrealism in concrete music, which is moreover an apology for the Oxymore. It's closer to what I was doing at the very beginning. Like what, we only repeat ourselves, even if we decline things differently. We remain obsessed with the same idea. I conceived it as a film or a ballet, with an underlying dramatic progression that brings from one atmosphere to another and elements that may seem illogical or contradictory.

Jean-Michel Jarre will offer a musical dialogue with Pierre Henry on January 21, 22 and 23 at the Maison de la Radio et de la Musique, as part of Hyper Weekend. A way to dive back into his debut at the GRM…

As part of the Hyper Weekend programmed by Didier Varrod, which will take place from January 21 to 23 at the Maison de la Radio et de la Musique, Jean-Michel Jarre will present Oxymore, a new work conceived around and with sounds that he bequeathed – with a view to a collaboration – Pierre Henry, pioneer of electroacoustic music who died in 2017.
