They don't use wikipedia for their estimates. They do that seriously but reality is probably between 30 and 80. (Today or tomorrow ^^)

I know Kanta, we can find it everywhere. :) In fact, i meant "official" estimation given by FDM, Warner, TV, Wikipedia, ...

"Chartsinfrance" members are trying to recreate by themselves an estimate of disc sales from different sources and methods, for about 6000 albums in all. (I read that it took about 30 minutes per album.)

The one who has estimated JMJ's disc sales said that :
Almost finished topic. Although I really like this artist I doubted of 80 million albums sold (12 million for Oxygen), after much research, there are 30 million max, which is still excellent.

When I joined the community in 2003, I sort of remember the most common figure that was referred to in these threads being 56 million records. And then one year later Dreyfus made the announcement where it was 80 million and now it seems to be fluctuating like mad.

But as the great French JMJ site once reported (I'm sorry, buddy, I can't remember your name right now :( ), Oxygene 7-13 sold something like 200,000 copies and that's still his latest successful release.. so if the figure was at 40 million in 1990, well, I'd say it's something like 40-56 million.

Or rather, I have no idea, and I doubt we'll ever know. I'd still say that he'd be way more well-known if he had sold like 80 million records.

Probably half of that was bought by fans that keep buying the same albums over and over again. Each time because 0,5 second was added, a new compilation album saw the light of day, a new technique was used or someone butchered, I mean Remastered, something we already have bought ages ago.

On this old note, This promotional booklet puts the figure at 40 million. Judging by the text (including, to-me, never-before-seen quotes from Deng Xiaoping and Jacques Chirac - I wonder where they were sourced from!), this booklet was made some time after PLD so it's probably from 1990 or 1991.

It still amuses me how the "80 million records sold" suddenly popped up in 2004 or so, as if they suddenly went "you know, we never counted the amount of JMJ records sold in China" or something. ;)

Yes, that "80 million albums sold" has bugged me for a while too... It would be interesting to see the first statement with the number 80. Maybe it was originally "80 million records sold", implying albums, but also singles, maxis, etc. Then that number would seem fair since JMJ had a couple of hits in the 70s and 80s. "Records" might have been distorted into "albums" later.

To make their calculations more credible they would do to publish album sales from other composers, musicians.

+1 I wouldn't believe those numbers for one second. Just a personal opinion.
