The "bizzare" voice sample is one of the presets from the Fairlight.
Jarre concerts attended - Destination Docklands 1988 - Paris La Defense 1990 - Europe In Concert 1993 (Manchester & London) - Oxygene Tour 1997 (Birmingham)

(If you've ever read the Remilleux JMJ biography, there is a photo of Michel Geiss, I think, outside a supermarket with a microphone for recording samples for Music For Supermarkets).... I don't want to be disillusioned now to find that wasn't the case with Zoolook!

I never read the booklet as I bought my copy in France, and the Rendez-Vous, Revolutions and En Attent Cousteau were in Frensh, so I never even bothered to look into the one that came with Zoolook :P

But yeah that photo of Geiss with the recorder was also inside the MPS record, so I guess that's atleast true. But did Jarre in the end really take that many samples from devices rathen making them himself, as I thought all the human voice samples were selfmade :|

I have the iPhone/iPad 'Fairlight' app which the 'Bizzare' voice is part of the CMI IIx disc's in the effects No1 set.

Most of the 'Moon Machine' samples are also present in the Failrlight. I have most of them in this app.

Some of the Zoolook sounds are presets but I'm sure that some of them were made by Jarre and his team. It's a combination of both.

In my opinion, Jarre is more of a composer and arranger than a sound designer. If the preset sounds good and works in the context of the track then he will use it. If there are no presets that fit the track then he or one of his team will create it.

I think he just cares about the final result, the finished track. He uses whatever he needs (session musicians, presets, collaborators) to reach that goal. But in the end it is always a 'Jarre track' because he is making the decisions about which sounds are used, how they are arranged and the melodies that are played.

Most big synth players had engineers who did the programming and whatnot for them enabling them to concentrate on the composition. I prefer this approach as I think that some synth players get so obsessed with the programming side and the avoidance of anything that could be conceived to be a 'preset' that they forget that the whole point of writing a piece of music is so it can be listened to and enjoyed!

No-one ever complained that a guitarist or pianist were using the preset sound!

According to the sleeve notes -

'The human voices on this album were created from recordings of speech and song. They were edited and transformed using different electronic devices'.

It then goes onto list the keyboards and electronic devices used. It doesn't say who recorded them just that 'Ethnic vocals processed by JMJ'.

Well I talked to someone who owned an original CMI IIx back in the days. He said he spent an amazing lot of time trying to figure out how to program it, and once he found it, he was bored and sold it. No wonder JMJ mostly sticked to the presets and basic sampling things.
