Equinoxe german vinyl bad sound

Hello everybody !

After buying some of the Jarre albums in vinyl (Oxygene, Magnetic Fields, Rendez-Vous, Zoolook and Equinoxe) i am disappointed of the sound of the Equinoxe pressing.... there seem to miss some mids and especially the higher sounds... all other vinyls are sounding really great. I got the 1978 german polydor pressing.

So my question is if there are any pressings of the Equinoxe vinyl that have proper, clear sound?

I have the Dutch aswell as the Japanese pressing of Equinoxe, and the japanese is by far the better one. It sounds very well, makes me wonder what they were doing over there in Japan to make them sound so amazing :D

I totally agree. Japanese vinyl is the best.

What they were doing in Japan?

Well... unlike releases in other countries, Japanese record companies used to make new master records from (1st generation copies of) master tapes and they presses on superior, virgin (not recycled) vinyl.

Equinoxe and Oxygene sound far superior one Japanese vinyl than any other release, even MFSL.

The Japanese use(d) virgin vinyl rather than recycled vinyl, and master at half speed apparantley.

Thank you all for the anwers !

The japanese pressing seems hard to find. What`s with the french / uk / usa pressing ? Does anyone have these and can tell me about the sound quality ?

They are easily to find at a normal price at ebay or internet vinyl store....

Or does someone offer the japanese pressing ? 8)

Japanese pressings appeared on eBay quite frequently back in 2008 when I was interested. :P

OK, fair enough, there's a slight increase of interest lately.

Hmmm, too much money for me....

the french release is about 10 EUR at ebay, anyone here who has this release ?

If it is better than the german and has better sound it would be the right one for me.....

Ditto the sentiments on Japanese vinyl. I used to have (maybe still do, somewhere), the original Japanese vinyl pressing of Antarctica by Vangelis. Totally blows the CD away, sound-wise.

So i bought now the 1978 french Dreyfus pressing, and the sound is alright now.

Maybe they got bad master tapes that time in germany, the german music cassette sounds also that bad...

...paid 8 EUROS for a nearly mint vinyl. Now its alright for me, thanks for your help !

One thing if you would want to buy the albums on CD, always buy the unmastered disc's, although the remasters do have some point where they sound better... The cons really outweight the pro's :?

I have had the german vinyl release since 1988, a UK release and the MFSL release for a couple of years and I think it's hard to hear any clear difference between the german and UK printing other then slightly more worn tracks on the first one. However my guess is that the mfsl tops the other two....at least I'd like to think that way. :nod:
Can't say anything about the Japaneese release though.
