As part of the International Year of Astronomy (AMA09), Observatoire de Paris and Ecole Normale Superieure organize the 1st Open Forum on the theme of exploration to 360 °, on a proposal by the journalist / anthropologist Paola Antolini, in the preamble of Nuit Blanche.

To mark the 400th anniversary of the invention of the telescope by Galileo in 1609, the international scientific community, with two Nobel Prize winners, Claude Cohen - Tannoudji, and George Fitzgerald Smoot, with artists Jean Michel Jarre and Lucien Clergue, among others, and all civil society, mobilized their efforts to offer an unprecedented encounter, and an interdisciplinary reflection on the exploration of 360 °. Since the invention of Galilee, a true celestial explorer, our cosmos has revealed an astonishing richness: mountains and craters on the Moon, phases of Venus, sunspots ... These explorations, these unexpected visions of new worlds, these discoveries revolutionized our philosophy of the universe, and pushed to improve the instrumentation for further discoveries. But perceiving one in the telescope of Galileo? A new consciousness of the world - imago mundi - and a new vision of the place of human beings in the universe: "... A nothing in relation to the infinite" said Blaise Pascal in 1652.

But what form the factory thought of an explorer - the cosmological science, physics of cold atoms or artistic creation - and leads to a discovery? The purpose of this meeting is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for an innovative approach aimed at strengthening dialogue between the international scientific community, artists and civil society: it is a new dialogue that has as main objective awareness, even the spell if possible, new generations of explorers, scientists and / or artistic.

In this International Year of Astronomy, Observatoire de Paris participates in the Nuit Blanche in Paris by sending a laser beam from the roof of the Observatory to Montmartre and the dissemination of astronomical images on the facade of his building Perrault.

This route will determine the location of Perrault building and with it the birth of astronomy institutional France. In this International Year of Astronomy 2009, Observatoire de Paris takes over the White Night to mark this historic moment for the 'astronomy.

"A green flash in a white night" operation has two components:

Laser shot on the Paris Meridian
To mark the 400th anniversary of Galileo's discoveries, the Observatoire de Paris, the first French organization of astronomical research, materializes the Meridian of Paris Montmartre drawing on a powerful green laser beam. Thus, all Paris will see a "green flash in the Nuit Blanche": indeed, the Paris Observatory from which the Paris meridian was drawn was mobilized for a laser shot is sent from the roof of the building towards the water tower of the Butte Montmartre, which will be lit up ...

Shooting Laser established through the collaboration of the Laboratory Reference Systems Time-Space - SIRTE Observatoire de Paris, coherent society and the company Eau de Paris.

Projections of astronomical images on the facade of the Paris Observatory
At 61 avenue de l'Observatoire, in the 14th arrondissement, visitors to Nuit Blanche are invited to admire the astronomical images continuously projected on a screen at the front of the historic building, whose foundation stone was laid in 1667 by the architect Claude Perrault at the request of Colbert ... The projection has a plethora of images of artists, photographers and astronomers stressing the evocative power of the cosmos.

A project signed by the photographer Lucien Clergue, journalist and director Paola Antolini and astrophysicist Jean-Louis Bougeret. Locally, the composer Jean Michel Jarre trigger the laser shot, before responding to an interview with Paola Antolini.
