Isn't it about time Oxygene recieved the classic album treatment, ala "Who's next", "Dark Side Of The Moon" etc? For those who don't know, "Classic Albums" is a series of programmes that were made about the making of some of the all time greatest records. They usually get shown on VH-1 and The Biography Channel. Anyone else agree????

Yeah, I can only agree with that. Even if it's not your favorite music, Oxygene is a classic album which brought electronic music to the big public. Plus, it has some great tunes.

I'd fully agree that but Jarre never gets the recognition he deserves, especially in Britain. Maybe in 60 years :P

Hey, there is a book, "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" is a musical reference book edited by Robert Dimery. Released in 2006, it consists of a list of albums released between 1955 and 2005. The book is arranged chronologically, starting with Frank Sinatra's In the Wee Small Hours and concluding with Get Behind Me Satan by The White Stripes. Each entry in the list is accompanied by a short essay written by a noted music critic. The entries are accompanied by pictures, quotes, and additional information (such as the album's running time and producer).

The good thing is: OXYGENE - 1976 is There !!! Great

But no more Jarre's albums or Vangelis.

Kraftwerk has 3 reference: Autobahn, Trans-Europe Express and Man Machine

The list complete is here:

This is the cover from Brazilian(portuguese) edition

I don't know what it is with Britain but the media seem to love having a go at Jean-Michel and ignore his achievements. It's all about credibilty in the UK and they seem to give it to the most useless and fake artists. Pete Docherty, Amy Winehouse etc. If nothing else, Jarre was/is an innovator. Uk rock musicians simply re-hash everything that has gone before then the music press claim they are geniuses and original. I'm not going to say that everything Jarre has done is brilliant, but he deserves some credit for genuinely doing things which are original in conception!

Yeah, same for the rest of the world. Minus Europe, no one's ever heard of Jarre.
Without faith nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible.

One simple word sums Jarre up here in England - French. . . . The Brits and the French have really never seen eye to eye. Shame it's still played out that way. He'll certainly get the recognition he deserves. . . . . when he's pushing up the daiseys. Bit late then.

Quote from the book with so called experts...
90's
Spears, Britney – Baby One More Time
And there not talking about the sh..ty single, the're talking about the complete sh..

No need to look further or discuss about the whole thing.
This is not an album I couldn't even think of listening to (again).

Silliness to its upperpoint - and not to mention ridiculous treatments of non english-vocals... Plus the scale of jazz discs treated like lower fantasies. Coltrane gets a single entry and he's known as one the two or three main guys in the business... You got Coltrane to compete with Britney Spears ?

See the few frenchmen have their rights to join the list. Let's be honest... MC Solaar is very kind person... but come on ! Why did they pick this man from the two they reserved to our country ? Do you know the numerous great singers we have in France ? Léo Ferré, Barbara (one the greatest artists ever), George Brassens, Dalida, Alain Bashung, Michel Berger, Charles Trenet, Michel Polnareff, Alain Souchon, Charles Aznavour, Michel Sardou, Claude François, Daniel Balavoine and so much more !

And on the synth level...
Tangerine Dream experts wouldn't place Phaedra as their greatest album... And by the way, they were using synths before that album !

What about Vangelis ? Probably one of the greatest composers of our time ? He sold millions of albums and has incredible legacy ! He doesn't even get a line !

Rubbish... This is really, really annoying...

Oxygene is a classic for sure, but its only relished in Electronic circles so that sidelines Jarre's success in a Mainstream focus,or as a pioneer in the whole Music Field, secondly couple that with no lyrical content, the fact he plays synths and has no commercial focus on a single. His music is better suited to 7 minute tracks rather than standard Air play and those tracks that are considered "Radio friendly" only fall into the "Oxygene part 4" Bracket, most people would have never heard anything other than that, because put simply, thats all he's ever been labelled with or the large epic concerts, ask the average man any album from him, chances are they can only name Oxygene (or rarely) Equinoxe or none at all,hum a track and chances are they know the music rather than the Name

Nationality has nothing to do with his recognition, even if he was English or American,he'd still be in the same position,if he was in a band and sang,he'd have been acknowledged years ago,he's only a Pioneer to other synth laden artists, you don't hear of many mainstream rock or pop outfits recite him as an Influence, its only small genres of electronic artists who don't build their reputation in the charts that have seen or heard or gathered inspiration from him and others.

Jarre would be more suited for a Lifetime achievement award,he's still around and has influenced many artist around the world, and given his relatively small market of Music has had great longevity,I don't think Oxygene needs to be given a cult status,he's hung onto that Bubble for the past 30 years,he needs some recognition for his whole artistic approach not just a few simple commercial melodies, its merely a blip on his route to stardom,I think its great he revisted it with a Live approach in these concerts but Quite frankly that was too Cliched and predictable and he needs to focus on something newer using this Ideology on approaching the Music and instruments he so rightly made his own.

Even after he's gone to the big synths in the sky he won't get anymore recognition, its a sad fact we all know but its true.if he was to be considered hip or cool or recognised for somethign so pioneering that would have happened a long time ago,not 30 years after the conception just because Jarre decides to revisit its still of one of the most individual and respected electronic albums of the past century Why the need to be classed as Innovative or pushed into the Classic status,in this throwaway Society it'll be yesterdays news within a matter of days.the rest of us will still cling to the superb music we all love no matter what the fashion or dish of the day,and even in another further 30 years I suspect too.

60+Million album sales, and a career of almost 40 years,Would have thought thats proof enough without all the other achievements that he's successful and Pioneering,a lifetime achievement would be more significant to his reportior than a badge for a classic Album,we all know its a classic anyway.

Why do I get the strange feeling that if he was American he would be considerably more recognised in the mainstream? After all everything that comes out of America, the rest of the world must also consume.

Well, I think it is a bit risky to say something like that. Again, if you count all the american and english folks in the list, you can say you get far-out better chances to get into the list if you speak english (again, Britney !). The honest title of that list looks like : The 901 (?) english langage albums you have to listen to...

Where's Cesare Evoria ? Viktor Tsoi ? What about Julio ? Oum Kalsoum (The greatest singer of all time) ? Alpha Blondy ? Sonu Nigam ? Gilberto Gil ? Yoshiko Ishii ? and so on...

Like Frankie goes... It's a shame...
