I used my Altec Lansing for 1 year, then now I use my 2x 500w JBL speakers with a Philips amp, and it works perfectly as a monitoring unit

Well, the power is not the problem. It's more about the frequency range, and something to solve the longitutional waves @ your studio

My speakers have a huge frequency range !!
My father bought the ones with the highest range 20 years ago, and they are still alive

What frequency range exactly? And do they play each frequency at the same level? (maybe you can split the topic or sth?

Nobody can hear below 20hz and above 22khz anyway.

Well doh, but if your speaker only starts at 60 Hz, that's a difference of 1,5 octave

well, myes/mno... you can kinda feel freqs below 20Hz, and what freqs above 22kHz are concerned: as soon as the neighbourhood dogs begin to bark without no reason, you can "hear" those as well

You can actually "detect" higher frequencies than 22kHz (or whatever) but what we hear is the interference with lower frequencies wich are in the range that human ears can hear directly. Some higher frequencies we will experience as nasty distortion while others adds a nice atmosphere to the music.
That's why i.e. SACD players use to have low-pass filters at about 100 kHz.
