eBay Acquires Dutch Company Marktplaats.nl

This happened back in 2004!!!! So Marktplaats.nl is now making revenue for eBay in San Jose, California hahaha!

San Jose, Calif. and Emmeloord, Netherlands, November 10, 2004 - eBay, the World's Online Marketplace (Nasdaq: EBAY; www.ebay.com), today announced that it has acquired Marktplaats.nl (www.marktplaats.nl), the leading classifieds website in the Netherlands. eBay purchased Marktplaats.nl from Het Goed Beheer BV, a company that owns second-hand retail shops in the Netherlands. The acquisition allows Marktplaats.nl to grow its business through the investment and online trading expertise of eBay. eBay will be able to expand its e-commerce position in the Netherlands while adding to its growing knowledge of classifieds-style trading. eBay plans to continue to operate Marktplaats.nl as a separate business.

I've been trying to figure out how Marktplaats.nl works and I guess you just keep bidding until the seller say"hmmm... I'll take that one..." I dunno, kind of dumb to me. The seller would never know if they really got the maxiumum price.

Yeah I know about that. It's a pretty unreliable site though. You can easily get fooled there.

Really, how?

I saw something I wanted and contacted the seller. He was nice enough to explain how it works and even takes Paypal (well, duh...since Paypal is owned by eBay too... ). Seems pretty straightforward now that I understand the concept. But there seems to be no feedback mechanism. Fortunately, with Paypal if something goes wrong I can get my money back.

How? There's no support and no feedback.

I have once bought something there, paid by bank transfer (common within NL) and never heard from the seller again. The policy says "at your own risk" - so voila...

Yeah, but I still like it more than Ebay. I always buy my gear second hand on Marktplaats. When I pick it up, I try it, and then decide if it's worth what the seller wants. :)

You Dutch play rough!

BTW...I picked up this super Dutch film on DVD that I saw several years ago. The English title is "Character". Maybe the Dutch title is the same I think... Anyway, I'm waaaay OFFTOPIC!

In offtopic mood: The Dutch title is "Karakter"! It's a movie with our great Flemish actor Jan Decleir! He plays also in the "Zaak Alhzeimer" (Or in English "The Alhzeimer Case"!). He is one of the greatest actors in Belgium and he is the Belgian Robert De Niro... :wink:
