Making new melodies

Hi,
Doesn't it just suck when you make a new melody and after writing/programming and then playing it, you find it's already been taken. I did it years ago making a bassline for a track that ended up as almost an exact copy of the Human League's "Sound Of The Crowd" riff. I did it again this morning with a melody sounding like something from Chrono 4, very very annoying.
Anyone else had this problem?

Yeah, the same happened to me when I was making a lead, I often had a Jarre-lead :pwned:
But now I don't make leads anymore, I don't have that problem :punch:

If you make a lead, you can start with a JMJ-lead, and then slightly modify it bit by bit. And in the end, you have your own lead in JMJ-style. That's how many well-known artists work nowadays :)

Use the Riff, change the key and leave a couple of notes out here and there and you can claim it as your own.....If thats good enough for a court of law,who cares!!!!You can pretty Much get away with anything providing its not copied note for note

I've written stuff that sounds reminisicent of other artists(Mostly stuff Ive listened to over the years),thats where your inspiration comes from so its inevitable your own music will somehow has a similar vibe

You'll never get away from it and its been going on for centuries from other artists, you wont make anything thats totally unique because chances are someone somewhere has aready done it,but thats because of the limitations on the chords and scales availible, stop worrying about it and just get on with what your doing,as soon as you analyze it you'll begin to doubt what you do full stop

Speaking of Chronologie 4,the chorus chord progression(the intervals) are the same as a track by the Four Tops, but Jarre and the 4 tops are worlds apart.....

Look at Some of Jarre's tracks,Emigrant uses a simlar Elements to Whiter shade of Pale which can be linked to Air on a G string.....

and others like Millions of stars/Bladerunner/Oxygene 7/Oxygene 4/Popcorn,you can run a line through a tank load of artists and there tracks.....I mean many tracks come from the Inspiration of others to get the ideas flowing,Jarres even done it with his own tracks...Chrono 4-Chrono 5/RV1/RV2/Eq5/Eq8,Chrono8-Palawan the list is endless, even The teo and tea Track is almost identical to a track by Tiesto

Almost nearly every track in the 60s were based on the same Chord progressions, half of Elvis Presleys tracks use the same chord progs, there so uncanny you can even sing the lyrics from one song over another song and they still fit and the melodies are almost identical, and the same with a lot of Country and Bluegrass styles,Jerry Lee lewis's writers must have only knew the 12 bar blues progs almost all his hits are based on that, they just have simple counter melodies over the tracks, which when you look on paper are pretty much the same,it's how you utlise them to make them sound different

Dont worry about it and just compose, the day you write a track that is so unique it sounds like nothing ever heard before and its in a division of its own is the day My arse will heal over

I'm always scared I make something new that's already been used....

But then... there are only 12 key's/octave... the chance you hit the same key someone else used is huge.... the chance you create the same sequence is also big like a simple C3 C4 C3 C4 bass line for example... then there is the sound... if you use a preset the chance is someone else used it is also big... you'll always sound like some <fill in other artist> so....

Stop worrying and just make music :)

Best piece of advice: don't listen to any music for a while... then compose.

Or you have an other problem (as I had) :
You compose a track, and some months after, you find out that this melody has already been used (more or less) by an artist you have just discovered :P

That problem I just recognized with one of the tracks for my musical :P . The intro sounds a little like a track by FR :)
