I have recently bought the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player and can report that it does

not play ordinary DVD`s whereas the sony PS3 that I also have definatly does.

As for quality differences between the two formats I can detect no visual difference.

I personally would go for Blu-ray as there is a greater varity of films available and

also more film companies supporting this format.

Now that Warner (and in effect New Line, HBO) are going Blu-Ray exclusive that is 70/30 split for studios in favor of Blu-Ray!

Even Steven Spielberg has said he would not release his movies in HD until there was a clear winner was always a Blu supporter. Plus he really hates Paramount. Now it will just take Universal getting out of their HD-DVD contract to surely win him back.

But I think the real reason for this decision by Warners (mpre than some buyout-since both sides were trying to bribe them) is the fact that not only have HD sales slumped but regular DVD sales slumped as well and that scared the bejeesus out of them. If they didn't act soon, there would be no mass HD adopters and peopel would stay with SDVD until downloadable content was the norm (which it will be...)

So today (even if a bit pre-mature) we say HOORAY for BLU-RAY!!!

(and a little boo to Warner for taking so long to announce their decision as HD-DVD fans wasted their money on what will be an obsolete format--Laserdisc anyone..'tis sad but true.)

Note: I knew there was a reason I waited on buying HD Content...But heck, I think I'll wait a little longer...

Well I Found one of Speilberg's films on Blu-ray a couple of days ago . It was "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"

Bah, any kind of disc media will be superfluous in the future!

Enjoy downloading 50 GB of data by digital distribution. :-/

Digital Distribution is still way off.

It's closer than you think.

I always hoped it would be Blu-ray because of it's capacity.

I also hope for BluRay to be the "winner"

Yes, owned by Columbia (Sony) not directly controlled by Dreamworks or Universal of which Speilberg has more control...

And finally, what would one of these format war posts be without another mention of Michael Bay. Here's what he had to say on his website yesterday about the Warner news:

"Well another studio down. Maybe I was right? Blu ray is just better. HD will die a slow death. It's what I predicted a year ago. Now with Warner's down for the count with Blu Ray. That makes it easier for Wal-Mart to push Blu Ray. And whatever Wal-Mart pushes - wins. Hd better start giving out those $120 million dollars checks to stay alive. Maybe they can give me some so I can give it to my Make-A-Wish charity, just to shut me up. Have faith people Transformers will come out in Blu-ray one day!

ON A COMPLETELY SEPARATE NOTE:
I found out today I may get to go visit Robert Zemeckis on his set filming his new 3D Motion Capture film (after Beowulf)...I'm not sure if I can reveal the details but it will be another classic (think "Dickens") with a very famous actor doing all the parts...stay tuned!

New Line Shifts to Blu-ray Exclusivity

'Following Warner's lead, sister company New Line has confirmed that it will support Blu-ray Disc high def releases exclusively. New Line has previously delayed their day-and-date new releases on HD DVD due to the format's lack of region coding, effectively making titles such as Shoot 'em Up, Hairspray, and Rush Hour 3 exclusive to Blu-ray. Although a 2008 release slate for the studio has not been released, an announcement may be possible at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.'
