I have been thinking of composing a gentle remix of Oxygen 4 for a long time, and today, my wish turned to reality!

So here we are at last: you are welcome to discover my new home-made remix, which I renamed:

Cool, not bad. I especially liked that it wasn't too far from the original. I also really like that theme on the cover with the star or sparkle.

Yes, I thought also...

I like the accompany!!! Only one thing: the first lead is a bit thin, it isn't as fat as the original. That makes it a bit strange. (oh, me always with my comments... Don't pay attention to it, I'm a perfectionist!). The rest I like very much!

I am going to be pretty analytical here simply because the remix is Excellent
And a few touches IMO would make it even better...

(ps. I am as critical with JMJ’s work & even more critical of my own stuff)

* Nice choice of sounds : nearly all of them.
* Nice space to the mix.

* SUPERB sampled intro
* 41 sec when bass drum when it kicks in (Nice) reminiscent of Airworlf theme intro
* 51 sec lovely intro of phased chords
* 1min9 could do without the mini drum roll: a bit cheesy
* Lovely subtle Glissandos
* 1min35 chorus voice not quite fitting the man melody voice or the track
* 1min38 extra hat could come in on 2nd verse on 2min27

* 2min03 nice drum roll from 1st verse to 1st bridge: just right :
not too much not too little, just in the right place.

* Extra tambourines on 1st bridge 2min05; 2nd bridge 2min59
a bit too loud & a bit harsh not quite fitting in the mix

* 2min05 extra hit on “snare” for the 1stbridge :
be put on at the 1st solo 2min16 : thus adding something else to the solo.
And then added also to the 2nd bridge 2min58.

* Nice detunes (reminiscent of Docklands Oxy4) :
2min04 : 1st verse to 1st bridge
2min14: 1st bridge to 1st solo
2min27 : 1st solo to 2nd verse
2min58 : 2nd verse to 2nd bridge
3min09 : 2nd bridge to 2nd solo
3min20, 3min43, 3min55, in the final solo.

* Nice drum roll on 3min55 : again just right : not too much not too little,
just in the right place.

* 3min56 after the drum roll would have edited to 4min42 :
because these 46 seconds in between weaken the impact of the mix,
seems like filler, kind of loose interest in these 46 seconds.

* 4min42 to end is Excellent.

* 4min54 don’t need the chords as the bass & drums on their own are superb enough
and maintain a gritty edge which is lost when the soft
(somewhat cheesy voiced) chords come in.


* 5min15 drum roll could be just a very tiny bit longer as it is the end/last roll

* 5min17 lovely sampled end to track : mirroring the intro samples.



Well, there you go.
IMO with a few subtle adjustments this Remix could be A1 !

I usually don't like cover remixes...but this is not bad at all.
It's a very nice selection of sounds and somehow it makes sense.
It's down to earth and simply genious.

...still I prefer own compositions.

I thought it was the right time to remix it !

I did all the arrengments on a Roland jx-305 and a yamaha CS2x but most of the sounds are coming from VSti's like Superwave P8, Vangard, z3ta+ and Korg Legacy. Orion was the main arranger but everything was eventually re-imported in cakewalk.

I mastered ANY sound one by one with Soundforge before importing them into cakewalk.
The mastering was done with T-racks24 at the very end. I have been working this way for years on my different projects, including my forthcoming album, available soon on my website!

THanks! Yes there are many ways to remix a music tune...techno, trance etc but I wanted to stay faithful to the original version. I think some hazardous remixes can sometimes literally kill a masterpiece. Otherwise, I do some basic photoshop things too...very basic things. I am not a graphist but I know I can do some decent work with photographs and colors.

As you guess, yes it is !! I love this sound so much Thats the transition sound between Oxygen part 4/5. I assume it was initially generated by the VCs3, but I am not sure of this. THese analog synths were generating truely incredible abstract sounds and effetcs. JMJ is really hard to beat!

That's ok! The lead sound was effectively generated by the Roland JX305, a keyboard commercialized in the late 90's.
I re-shaped a "Syn Brass" patch from the presets : VCA envlope + filters with a massive Reverb/Delay plug-in treatment.
But I know it sounds digital, which is the title of this remix after all

Thanks! you're are right. But you know, I think the choice of the sounds as well as the final mixing technique is a matter of individual musical sensitivity, which may vary a little bit from a person to one another. If you had done a remix of Oxygen4, you would have maybe prefered put the lead sound louder, for example... whereas I prefered to put a special emphasis on the phazing pads. These details depend on the individual I reckon...
I work on my own, but I would like to find a collaborator at some stage ... maybe a fan of JMJ too ?
