Thanx, boys, you made me smile :D

AnDrOiD - you use the word "violence" all the time referring to Zidane's behaviour. But what Materazzi did was also violence, and mental violence can be sometimes much worse than psyhical, believe me.
What should Zinedine have done then? You write "return the provocation vocally". He could have offended Italian's family too, sure, but it would be the worst possible answer, I would say that worse than hitting. Of course he could have said "fuck off" and showed him who is a master by scoring another goal, probably he now wishes he did so... But it's situation when emotions play a great role and as I wrote - everybody has some borders of endurance. I guess you also.

Lipreaders employed by "The Times" (in this case it's Jessika Rees, who is said to be a reliable specialist, ands whose abilities are used by courts), "The Sun" and "The Daily Mail" confirmed the version of racist dig, calling Zidane "terrorist".
Brazilian TV O Globo (they also used lipreaders) said that Materazzi offended French player's sister.

What's important - Materazzi confessed that he offended Zidane, according to Italian "La Gazetta dello Sport".

If Materazzi really did call him what these articles claims, he should just have ignored him, it's not worth wasting time on an idiot like that. Physical violence don't solve anything.

By "return the provocation vocally”, I mean talk back sensibly, not returning it with some stupid vocal provocation. If you did, you'd be no better than the provoker. And acting with physical violence, I'd say you're worse.

It's easy to say when you sit in front of your computer.

I fully agree.

It's not so obvious for me, words can hurt more than hitting or kicking.

But it's discussion for another thread - we can wonder if violence should be used only in situations, when life or health of somebody is in danger. In fact I was quite an idealistic pacifist and yeah, that's what I believed...still believe, but sometimes have doubts if I'm right in this point.

In fact for me it's not a case of justifying Zidane - it's a case of understanding him as a human, with such and such experiences and such and such emotions of the moment.

I wouldn't argue with this red card (although maybe Mr Materazzi should be puinished as well), but I do argue with saying that this incident (in fact not first such) crosses his whole career and makes him an old fool .
And well, calling somebody "old fool" seems also to be a sort of word agression, doesn't it, Mr No_Violence...? :P

Well, I'm capable of doing just that... ignoring idiots.

Yes, hurt your feelings... or psychological state. Physical violence can kill you.

No, for me it's a manner of speaking... I'm an old fool too.

So... if I call someone an old fool, it's al right for the person to hit me back, or where do you draw the line?

I believe you and I'm too...well, let's say I'm still learning ;)

Even though I think people shouldn't ignor every kind of idiotism. When I hear racist, anti-jewish or f.e. offending someone's disability comments in my environment, I wouldn't leave it just as it is, letting someone to say every stupid thing what came to his mind. Some words shouldn't be said in a world of such sad history.
The same if someone's offending my friends - as I know they would defend me too.

It is rather general thought, as Zidane did just what the agressor wanted and let him win.

And what I exactly wanted to say by the quoted sentence- you may not know your borders and it's hard to predict your reaction to every possible event...maybe Zidane promised himself before going on the pitch "Hey, listen man...any f*** idiot provocating you - ignore...and show who is a master!" - but there's a situation when you have been running nearly all the time for 110 minutes, you're extremely tired and stressed, maybe you were provocated from the beginning of a match, heard digs or being spitted (as it was suggested), it's really hard to control emotions when you finally hear someone offending people who are close to you or jeering of your origin (especially when - as in case of Zizou - you have to put up with it since your childhood). Sure - it is possible to ignore, even in such a situation. But not easy.

If you're one of this people who has achieved the level of never letting his emotions going out of control - congrats, I really respect such people.
Still can understand these, who haven't.

Yes, hurt your feelings... or psychological state. Physical violence can kill you.
At first - curing the body is often easier than curing hurt psyche.

Secondly - we both know Zidane's behaviour couldn't have killed Materazzi and it wasn't its aim to kill him. But I understand that we're now talking more generally, so - I see a difference between hitting something who offended your mother (which doen't mean I see as the best way) and trying to kill someone.

And in fact - your psychological state can kill you too, it's not the same death that dying in blood around, it's much more silent and much more longer death. I'm not sure if less painful.

But know we are referring to extremal situations.

What I know try to say, even leaving Zizou's case..I'd be very careful before making a statement that mental violence is "better" or "lighter" than physical violence. It's not truth IMHO. For me the husband/wife torturing his partner mentally isn't better that the one beating her/him.
And well, calling somebody "old fool" seems also to be a sort of word agression, doesn't it, Mr No_Violence...?
No, for me it's a manner of speaking... I'm an old fool too.[/quote]
For me none of you - Zidane and AnDrOiD - is an old fool. ;)
AnDrOiD wrote:So... if I call someone an old fool, it's al right for the person to hit me back, or where do you draw the line?
It's a tricky question, but I'm not going to escape from answer :P

Firstly - as you suggested, it depends on the "word manner" in the environment. If it's normal for you to call your friends/people in general "old fools"...friendly or something, it's clear. (But mind that for a person called an "old fool" it can be normal to hit you "friendly")

Secondly - it's a BIG difference between calling somebody an "old fool" and offending his family (some time ago it was a matter of honour to have a fight with the person who has done it - and in my opinion only narrow-minded people offend someone's families, it's a lack of any politeness) or laughing from his origin/ilness/something what he doesn't have any influence on

At last, and most important - I don't try to convince you, as you tried to suggest, that Zidane's behaviour was "all right". I was saying all the time that I understand it, which doesn't mean the same...

Now let me ask my question, it won't be tricky, I'm really intersted, especially that it's thing I'm still wondering about:

What are the situations when - in your opinion - we can justify psychical violence :?:

I'm not sure I fully understand your question? It could be I'm just extremely tired right now.

Not easy if your dead. :P

I wasn't referring to the Zidane/Materazzi incident when saying physical violence can kill you, but in general. Under the most unfortunate circumstances, what you'd think was “just” a “good old” beating, could result in the other persons death.

You wrote that violence doesn't solve anything - which is sentence in fact quite close to what I think. But I don't believe that there're no situations when you'd see violence as something wchich can be justified - such as if someone attacked you (or your child/girlfriend/grandmother/someone met by chance), or when you have to choose between using a violence to stop someone who is going to follow a plan of mass murder and many people (or just one person) lives.

So my question is - Is the situation when the life/health is in danger the only when you can understand using violence? (To be clear - if yes, nothing bad with it.) Or do you not accept violence in any situation?

Under the most unfortunate circumstances you can stifle your wife by hugging her or kill your child when pitching him a ball (which unfortunately hits back of his head very strongly or something) :P

But I understand what you mean, although it's an example of extremal situation. Actually nothing like "good old beating" exists in my dictionary, I'm not for using such methods.
Just as I wrote - I can understand people answerig to the violence with violence in some cases. Which - what I also wrote - is not the best way.
But people not always choose the best ways, they are just not androids ;)

@ Ronja:

Okay I should've explained from the beginning; the only possible way I'd be able to use physical violence would be if someone was using it towards me, or someone dear to me. I'd never throw the first punch, and I'd never use physical violence if someone was “just” using vocal provocation. And that's what I was on about from the very beginning; to return something vocal with physical violence is just plain wrong.

How I wish I could explain all this in Danish to you, I bet I could've done it in practically very few words. :P

As I have just read - Zinedine apperaed today in French television (just some minutes ago, I think).

He said that Materazzi offended his mother and sister.

But what's the most important for me...

He started (these may not be exact words, as I'm translating from Polish news servis):
"Sorry for what happened. I apologise especially children and their tutors, who say what we should do and what we shouldn't"

I think these words were needed, thank you, Zizou.

@ AnDrOiD - I understand your point ;)

I saw some highlights of the interview last night and at least Zizou has cleared the air. He says he does not regret the head butting but regrets and apologies that fans and children viewed it. He goes on to say that it was “serious provocation”. Zizou mentions that Materazzi insulted his mother and sister repeatedly and that he (Zizou) does not regret his action.

It is not clear to me whether FIFA will hold an investigation but I hope they do as Materazzi is denying what was said. Maybe no one will really know the truth but Zizou has paid for his fit of anger but what about Materazzi. I think he should be punished in someway by FIFA.

I too thank Zizou for his explanation in this sad incident :!:

Well given Matterazzi's past behavior he was rightfully put in his place by Zinedine and good luck to him for standing up to the arrogant foul dirty playing man,if any of you have seen Matterazzi's past actions for his league clubs you'd totally understand ZZ actions,it was only a matter of time before someone whacked him.
How he was selected for the national team is beyond me,this guy doesnt even deserve to be playing at that level with his track record.his conduct is paramount to violence.and should be punishable given the amount of video evidence, the inquest for this world Cup incident is on the 20th of July so i only hope that he gets what he deserves, its not like it was a totally innocent feud,Matterazzi is a serial offender and should have been disciplined beforehand and not be able to play at International Level.
its not just insults but from other video Evidence it looks like he pinched ZZ.

I respect him(ZZ) in the fact he stood up for what has been a very destructive attitude from such a loser of a player like Matterazzi,I'm pretty sure matterazzi has provoked Zidane before at club level.

Fairplay to him for apologising for the imagery he may have portrayed to viewers, but not for his actions against this monster,it shows that he's not afraid to stand up for his principles even with the pressure from FIFA to make it look remorseful.

I only hope Mr matterazzi learns a valuable lesson before someone returns the favour and give this guy a good beating, because if he carries on with his past offences,it'll only be a matter of time before someone does just that.

As for ZZ i like the guy hes a pinnacle of a Hero for me,a quiet, reserved family man who leads a professional football life that doesnt take on the typical image of an overpaid football player he earns a lot of money but doesn't fling it around like its out of fashion,I like ZZ very much.Shame that he had to end on such a low point to a brilliant career.

Anyway............Make up your own mind Who REALLY is the Offending player....

ZZ headbutt is pretty justified I think..........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2slJ9CB ... 20headbutt
