Monaco Royal Wedding Concert – 01/07/2011

My optinion (chronological, only about the tracklist):

1. Chronologie 1: was perfect as an overture.
2. Oxygene 2: could be kicked and replaced by Magnetic Fields 4. I really HATE the new melody sequence here!
3. Magnetic Fields 1: could be deleted completely.
4. Equinoxe 5: fits pefect.
5. Rendez-Vous 3: fits perfect. But please fix that damn harp!! :-(
6. Magnetic Fields 2: O.K. for me...
7. Souvenir of China: O.K. for me...
8. Oxygene 4: a must...

(at this place Equinoxe 7 could return - or save it as an encore!)

9, 10, 11: Replace Oxy 5 & Variation & theremin by full Ethniciolor (!). Most awful part of the concert now! WHY kill the "magic" here? :-(
12. Equinoxe 4: fits perfect.
13. Industrial Revulution 3: Very interesting change! But JMJ should respect the original melody. I liked it anyway. :-)
14. Rendez-Vous 2: a must... But PLEASE fix that damn ....
15. Vintage: well... äääähm .... why not? :-D
16. Chronologie 2: O.K. for me...
17. Wedding march: :-D
18. Chronologie 4: Where are the strings gone during the chorus??? It was the same during rehersals... Is the piece not finished for concerts yet?
19. Calypso 3: O.K. for me...
20. Rendez-Vous 4: A must, but please stop destroying it with caterwauling!!! :-(

21. Vintage as an encore again? Naaaaah :-(


I really appreciate that Chronologie 6 and Oxygene 12 are deleted finally...

Dispite a number of negative comments within this thread during and since last night, lets not forget that in the past, previous FREE concerts by Jarre were playback. It was nice to get a FREE Jarre concert on this scale that was, in all general purposes, live. But. . . . how many of us were brought up on these playback concerts - Docklands, PLD, EIC. So why complain. Doesn't make much sense. These concerts cost money to stage. If Jarre hadn't have tagged his show on the day of the wedding, people would be asking as to why he never did that to begin with. Damned if he does - damned if he don't. Since 12 DOTS, we have had a fantastic outdoor Jarre concert. It has taken 11 years for us fans to see that. I'm not saying "give Jarre a break". Guess I'm saying "be more considerate to his age and abilities". How many artists of 63 still get onstage and knock out a concert like we watched last night. The list is dwindling. Yet Jarre was onstage with the stance and vigour of a man in his 20s. Not many of todays new and younger artists could pull off a show like last nights. Lets hope this is not his last outdoor show.

Watching the concert again intently at the moment, and it seems to be correct, that some samles of clapping croud were added in realtime (as someone already assumed).

Well, what is this? Kind of emergency plan for audience at home?

Was the mood that bad in monaco? :shock:

I remember concert at Mont Saint Michel that I attended in 1993, were the mood was not the best also...

As a nerd I can understand WHY those problems happen and appreciate that they can't always be avoided, however for a big free concert like that then I think it's a gamble too far. But for a fan like myself, I've seen JMJ countless times and for the past few years we've had the same thing each time, clumsy solos and out of tune synths, I just feel that like his equipment it's getting old. I don't care that he's using a 40 year old synth I just want to hear good music.

My own theory is that the "mood" you're describing is infact a jaw-dropping crowd.
Jaw-dropping people doesn't make much noise, because how can you comprehend with all the things going on in front of you in a situation like that if at the same time you are screaming from the top of your lungs and clapping hands like a maniac? Besides that photo over the area shows that there wasn't much people just infront the edge of the stage.
An other difficultie would be to actually mic out some sounds from a crowd, jaw-dropping or not, wich would be on an entirely different level then the music. That's what I think.

Not sure if I exactly can follow (I am german, sorry).
Fact is, that at one special point during the over 20 minutes of webstream BEFORE the beginning they switched through different crowd-noises and claps. One of them repeats over several minutes without changing... And that one noise (not to say sample) was added (appeared...) twice to keytar solo of JMJ during Industrial 3... in my optinion.

Really sad about that :-(

Ok you're probably right about the added sounds of a crowd.
Still I don't understand the sadness. The crowd was there, we all saw it. :)

I'm listening to the Waiting for Cousteau opening at the moment, and I have to agree, the clapping and audience noise is clearly not real... But then again, why would anyone clap for twenty minuts before the concerts had even started, it's kind of logical they added it during the first part :wink:

I Thought it was a really visually stunning concert. My personal favourite tracks of the night were equinoxe 5, magnetic fields 2, oxygene 4, chronologie 2, chronologie 4 and rendezvous 4. Vintage was nice but to me seemed to be a strange choice of dedication to the new princess... A bit 4/4 techno poppy perhaps! The wedding march also seemed to sound very similar to Queen's version (from Flash Gordon soundtrack) which JMJ downloaded from iTunes a couple of months ago ... But I will relisten as I'm sure it is different :)
Overall, despite the few mishaps particularly with the laser harp (but anyone remember Calypso 2 at la Defense?) a step in the right direction. Hope equinoxe 7 returns though next time :)
