I will have to agree wholeheartedly with Adam. Either my musical tastes are changing, or JMJ now longer holds my attention other than his early works. I really do hope that this so-called new album he says he is working on will make amends. Oh boy, do we need something! What a shame all these tours are getting in the way. And NO, JMJ doesn't need to perform concerts to sell his material. His back catalogue is vertually non-existant so he doesn't really have anything to sell. And what is publicity for? The right publicity is the selling tool.

Thats my rant over :|
Without going to much into details, that's how I'm feeling too.
Ok I know this multi legs arena/world tours with a whole armada of vintage instruments, lasers, large screens, fireworks, massive searchlights et.c. et.c. must have been one hell of a job for everybody involved. Creds to that. But at the end of the day it's a 2-3 hour experience with 80+ Euros spent for those fotunate enough to go and watch these spectacles. For those who can't there is nothing new at all. Although the worst thing of all is that there are no real new tracks to play on those fancy instruments. Exept for Oxygene and "Equinoxe 5" (wich appearently wasn't played live before) the track list has been practically the same for the last 11 years (I'm not even going to mention T&T tragedy).
Much new to see, nothing new to hear. JMJ is definitely not as creative musically as he was in the 70's-80's. This said I'm a hopeless optimist and still I have some faith in senior Jean Michel Jarre. There might still be some new organic material around the bend.
The only question is "if?" or "when?".

rants over :P

I guess to some, my above comments could be regarded as harsh. But they are for a good reason. If JMJ had said 10 years back "my music doesn't really appeal anymore, I'm retiring" then what a blow but what great memories we have. But it would seem he has been on a decline for some time. I will give him his dues, he picks himself up and try's again. It's one thing doing concerts, it's another being creative in the studio. The concerts are and have been for some time an over-kill. There once was a time we had a Jarre concert every so many years. Now it's a steady stream and at times, one after another. Not that's a bad thing, it's just that these concerts are taking away his creativity which should be spent in the studio. I, for one, would prefere to hear some new material which will blow me away than to stand in a crowd of people listening to Jarre live and saying "heard this before". But we are all differant. . . . . But one thing we do all more-or-less agree on is that Jarre's music has/is on a decline. His last great album being Oxy 7-13 and that was way back in 1997. What a long time ago that was. Almost feels like an eternity when you consider the other albums released afterwards. But then again, could this lack of creativity be due to "others" not working with him to their full potential.

Some times I look at Francis and think to myself, "surely he must get bored doing the same thing, over and over again with JMJ". He must stand on that stage thinking "oh, not this one again" :D

Metamorphoses was a great album in my opinion. Something different from his usual. Tried it again with Teo & Tea. It did not go down too well with a lot of JMJ fans but it grows on you. His last great album was GEOMETERY OF LOVE. This is a masterpiece i love listening to it on my mp3 player. I did not think much of sessions to be totally honest but again listening to it on my mp3 player it is really good.

Jean michel can still make a brilliant album but i think we have waited that long for new material we ourselves have moved on from his music. We are all expecting another Oxygene or Equinoxe but it's not going to happen.

If Adagio is anything to go buy i will not hold my breath. This track just does not go anywhere and i hated it at Manchester. :(

On JMJ live i would watch him every time he has a concert in the UK. I missed him in 2008 was in Manchester watching man utd play with my oldest son so could not make it. In 2009 i did not even know he was touring i was gutted. I don't care if it's the same tracks we have heard before. That is the music that got me into him. I like it even better when it's been changed. But the biggest reason i would go to watch him live is the LASER HARP. The tracks done by this are a thing of beauty. It is his biggest pull for me. I dragged my wife to Manchester in October the 2 times before this i went by myself. It was great loved every minute of it but wish i had not try to take photos on my phone as i feel i was not giving it 100 per cent attention.

I love the rarities release played it for a week solid but now ive moved on. Essentials hardly gets a play at all but my favourite essentials was the very first 1. Got all the best tracks on it.

I think as a fan base we have all moved on we will do we are getting older bloody 40 for gods sake still collect Jarre stuff. I wait in anticipation for this so called new album i will buy it to add to my collection. And if he tours again i will go. I am really looking forward to the concert in July for the wedding i think and hope it will be an amazing spectacle.

Some disagreements about his last great album and concerts.

What did you expect?
I expected nothing more or less than what we got. I just can't see why this thread has reached 52 pages. If it had been a new album I could understand it, but a glorified compilation?

For some time now I've been drifting away from JMJ. His music no longer holds the appeal it once did. So, perhaps it's time for me to bow out gracefully.

I like the new 'variation' tracks on Live In Your Living Room and I also like the Teo And Tea album... so I don't agree that Jarre hasn't done anything good for ten years.

I wonder if there is some hidden motivation behind the tour. For example, if he is looking for a new record label then a recent big tour would make him more palatable to record labels, it shows that he is still 'visible' in the public eye and also shows that he is able to 'promote a product'.

Personally I wish he would just sit down in the studio with his team for one month, with his vintage analog gear, and make a new album. I'm sure he is still capable of it. I think the problem is he thinks every new album has to be a big event with some kind of special theme and massive concerts. But most of his fans would just like to hear him make some melodic and atmospheric music with his vintage gear, they don't care about special guests or remixes or appearances on TV chatshows.

JMJ is like most other acts of his era (70's - 90's) touring makes money, much more than album sales. I wish he would record a new album too, but how would he release it? He either has no record deal, or he doesn't want to release what he has recorded thus far until he gets whatever he's looking for in a deal.

It's not just the 70's-90's era. Even the latest artists are struggling to make money. Touring is a sure way to increase income. Record companies no longer rely on album/single sales.

He should create a label that caters to this kind of electronic music and solve his own problems in the process. :P

When Duran Duran made their reunion album "Astronaut" they couldn't get a record deal, believe it or not. They actually financed the making of that album themselves. So they went on tour... And sold out everywhere they went in America, Australia, New Zealand and 5 sold-out nights at Wembley, hosted the MTV awards, won the Lifetime Achievement at the Q Awards and Brit Awards, celebrities came out to see them in concert and even the British press gave their concerts good reviews. And now they had "35" songs recorded and ready to go.

Only after "ALL" that did Epic Records approach them with a 4-record deal. And that's Duran Duran!

Gawd knows what Jarre would have to do at this stage to get a deal with a major. He's already slept with Polydor, SONY, Warner and EMI. Probably should have stayed at one of those at all costs. Even if they didn't promote him as much as he wanted, I'm sure it was better than nothing.

So yeah, records generate very little money today. It's all about the tour. And if that re-energizes Jarre to make new music, great. But I never saw Jarre as a touring kind of musician. It was partly the mystery that attracted me to his work. Fans would wait in anticipation for the next big Jarre concert somewhere in the world.

I remember being really young and my girlfriend and I saving all the money to travel to the UK and then take a bus and ferry and then another bus to be at Mont. St. Michel. I felt a bit like Jack Kerouac with this really amazing French artist waiting at the end of the road. And all my friends back in the US thought I was crazy. Just like the quote from Rendez-Vous Houston, they didn't even know who the hell this Jarr"e" guy was. It was crazy and beautiful!

Who knows, maybe Jarre is now touring ad nauseam because he owes Charlotte a lot of alimony from the divorce... Or just maybe Charlotte was his muse all those years...

I mean Oxygène, Équinoxe and Les Chants Magnétiques are really amazing albums, and what was the time between each of those outputs.... 2 years! I know Les Chants was 3 but with China Concerts in-between.

Zoolook, Rendez-Vous, Revolutions, En Attendant Cousteau... 2 years! With 2 live albums in-between!

Métamorphoses was 2000. Some really mediocre stuff in-between such as Sessions, Geometry... and then 7 years after Meta.... Téo & Téa! Considered the worst album of his career. Personally I think Teo & Tea is a fine album, it's just not an inspired album (though I LOVE Melancholic Rodeo --Ah, the album it could have been).

2012 will be going on 5 years since then. I'm sorry, but the longer it takes the worse it seems to get. But hey, I would love to be proved wrong on the new album.
Without faith nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible.

Jarre is just doing his own thing. I think he's doing a backwards carreer thingy: after Metamorphoses he started writing music for TV and movies again, doing experimental stuff and background music for clubs and companies (GoL and Interior Music). Metamorphoses was in a sense a goodbye album, the end of an era. Now he's just enjoying things he likes to do. Frederic Rousseau once told an interviewer JMJ couldn't do other music because the fans don't expect him to. But now JMJ is doing that exact thing.

And it's not just JMJ but also Vangelis and Mike Oldfield who don't release much new music nowadays. Too bad, but such is life.

If Jarre had not done anything exciting since his last *real* album, this forum would not exist.

My expectation is that the album is already done by now. He won't be doing it while touring, and Francis and Claude have loads of things to do both on their side.

In all fairness, you don't have to have new news/material for a forum to be created

here's an idea..

there's one place that JMJ would surley be guarantee big album sales should he decide to create the next one.

This idea would satisfy both the people who would like a new album AND the ongoing concerts.

The average show last 2hrs or so, JMJ could fit in about 40 minutes of new material in to that.

Then announce that you could buy the CD featuring this new material along side the other merchandise on offer.

If you are going to pay £20 for a programme, or £8 for a keyring, SURELY JMJ would make a killing selling a new album that way round??

that's my two pennies worth.
