This could have been the perfect opportunity to release the Travelator trilogy though

Yeah, a lot of missed opportunities in here.

Especially compared to the (sole remaining original member of) Kraftwerk, who basically remade their back catalogue, toured it for a few years and finally released the remakes last year. And it was pretty good, too. In fact, even Vangelis' Delectus box (even if it was quite lacking in the rarities derpartment) was done with care and actual production qualities.

Instead, JMJ gets the "Album Classics" with typos and missing tracks on the back cover, the Oxygene Trilogy "whipped-up-in-3-minutes" box with the scratchy records etc.

We're never going to get the trilogy... Also the boxset states cassette tapes, as in... These things?!



If so, why the hell not put the 5.1 mixes on a DVD instead of this?!

The physical set may have been high quality, the actual remasters were for half of them a mess. Audio drops in multiple records, terrible added reverb, tracks were cut short and more. And this was throughout the entire package. I could've forgiven one disc, perhaps two, but this set really wasn't great at all.

The cassettes are there as a gimmick. Just like all those vinyls sold today.

Gimmick/nostalgia/retro/souvenir - it's fitting, it's a "50th anniversary box".

"5.1 mixes on DVDs" are not a proper substitute to achieve this effect (and justify the price).

Oh! I remember the elsew.com review being rather positive for the boxset. Oh well.

Also, only now did I notice that the MFS Demo is on the "experimental" disc, so maybe there's a chance that instead of being a Diva demo, it's actually Part 2 (or the one right before the whatever-part-of-MFS-was-reused-in-Diva).

(Still would prefer Part 1, but eh)

2. Releasing stuff on tape for a 50 year retrospective makes sense in a way, I like that nod to the past.

And yes, it's also a shame that the PlanetJarre compilation album isn't accompanied by a "best of the concerts" type thing that could, at the very least, have one track per concert (not necessarily from every concert), preferably rare or newly edited ones (say, Rendez-Vous 4 from PLD or Oxygene 7 from the 1997 tour or the Vizitors overture or something). But yeah, even that would have been an actual surprise.

And we are apparently getting the second one, unfortunately (Shazaming various parts of MfS revealed this). Not sure why, it's an odd decision, as the first one (Overture) is *THE* MfS that the majority recognize and love. Maybe JMJ's keeping the first one for another occasion. Maybe when he retires at least.

A DVD's cost is literally pennies however. Sure mastering comes to it, but if they already have the 5.1 mixes, that takes the biggest part of the cost already out of it. And the cassettes are worthless in the year 2018 unlike vinyl. One is actually back in full force for various reasons, the other is not. I get the nostalgia for it, but the lack of a DVD and instead the compact cassettes that no one will actually use. It's just feels like a terrible waste of money. But whatever...

Just tried it myself, I can confirm it's the opening of the second track that's recognized:




Edit: I didn't order the boxset at Sounds earlier and it went up from €55 to €95 and bol.com has it for €75. The hell is up with these prices?! And that's not even mentioning the vinyl edition at a whooping €111/144

Taking a look on the tracklist in qobuz, I've found something interesting:

The track "Rendez-Vous II (part 4)" appears as copyrighted in 1987 (other tracks from "Rendez-Vous" album are dated in 1986). ¿the Houston single version, perhaps?

"Revolutions" is dated in 1988. ¿the original flute version instead the orchestral one from 1990?
