I wonder if this Vocal Designing isn't just the same as the VC1 card does for the V-Synth...

It is said that the VP-550 is basically just the VC2 card in an overpriced preset keyboard.

EDIT: VC1 changed to VC2 :D

VC1 is a Roland D50 emulator, right?
VC2 is the vocal designer... right?

If so, in that arena, there's also TC Helicon...
I never heard a VC2 and it's first time I hear the VP550, the work with choirs is convincing - the Helicon (which I've heard) is convincing at changing voices, pitching them right and creating vocal harmonies - with perfectly inteligeable speech, and I thought the VC2 was something like that too, not a somewhat "surreal" - not that inteligeable speech - huge choir modeller.

If the VP500 is a VC2 with keys, and a VC2 costs 200 Eur (are they still on the market? - Roland is shooting itself in the foot it's a budget VP550, or of thus is an overpriced VC2) and if you can stuff a VC2 into a VariOS, it may be better than the 1000 Eur the VP550 costs...

But the question remains, is the VP550 a VC2 on steroids? (with a keyboard, mic and stuff) Or does it go beyond?

Kind Regards,
AMR

The VP-550 allows you to do everything with your voice. Transformating it to male/female voices, voices in a special style, choirs, vocoding, etcetera. And all real-time with your own voice. And it has an ensemble and bass/percussion part in it. It's the successor of the vintage VP-330
What you say about the VC expansionboards, You need to have a V-synth to use it! I feel it a bit too expensive for only this synth, but wait a year, and the prices are much less than now!

But eehm... We are talking about the VP550 on the SH-201 forum!

Ah.. right.
It's quite an interesting "universal" virtua-analog VST's control surface *ahem*...

Sure, I know. But (1) JMJ has a V-Synth XT in his studio (which has built-in VC1/2 cards) - so the use of a V550 wouldn't make much sense unless it offers other features and (2) the V-Synth is in fact 3 synths in one within the same price tag range of the VP550... ;)

Now let's head back ontopic about the SH201.. :)

Kraftwerk are going to buy hundreds of these, even though it's hardware.

I think Kraftwerk will do better with the stuff they have right now. ;)
If they were going hardware again I think that some Clavia G2 and/or PEK:s would fit their needs better than this... 8)

Surely they'd go Doepfer with Florian (correct me if that's the wrong one) being friends with them and all...

So I tried out both the Radias and the SH201 today, and they were actually like I expected.

In short, the Radias offers a large amount of different sound sources, filtering options and sequencing possiblities, but lacks a lot of warmth and depth in my opinion. It sounded thin to me. And although most parameters can be reached right from the frontpanel, it was not hands-on editing like on any other VA synth. The signalpath is confusing. And then it's appearance: I have never seen something that ugly! Of course it has quite some positive characteristics too, but the machine just did not convince me.

As for the SH201 - Warm? Yes. Deep? Yeah, quite. Hands-on? Sure thing. Difference with JP8K? I have no clue. Does Roland have a point? No.
But that doesn't mean it's a cool synth :P Cause it is.

About the Radias (I know, we've got a topic for it): It sounds a bit thin, but the ms2000 is the same. It doesn't have the warm sound of the old korgs. I think the Radias is not much more than an improved ms2000 with some new functions and some functions from the korg workstations. But I have to say: It's a funny design!

Opinions, opinions... :-)

I find the microKorg really warm, if pushed right.

And I find the SH201 colder, altough the waveforms have some "grainy" tint to them, it's not cutting as much mustard as the MS2000 does.

The SH201 is by far the most real-time beast of them all, and I found myself in fact, altering the sound in realtime to fit my moodm per second... something I haven't done since my Mono/Poly (Korg) days, except with the mod-wheel and aftertouch.

I don't know the Radias, but the Oasys can be made to sound extremely thin and cold, but also extremely warm and phat - it's just a nigthmare to go trough all menu's, but it pays off if you want to be cirurgical and precise. The Oasys is a modern day CS80 and will probably "end" like one...

The SH201 is nostalgic, and great if people start to use it - but I have my doubts anyone used to Phantom pre-made complex patches will surrender to a "simple" SH201... they should have had sticked something "complex" on it too, just for the sake of arguments (motorized faders?).

Kind Regards,
AMR
