Both the SH-201 and the JP-8K are plastic. I don't think that they are very different from each other actually.

The JP8K was way overpriced (£1499 ukPounds in 1997) when released,I love the JP8K but just think it could have been so much more better Built,for starters the Plastic casing lets it down to its big brother and secondly the Pots are really shit and easily breakable especially with a well tweaked JP8K,Roland reduced the Price of the JP8K by some £300 Uk pounds after less than 12 months after release,not surprised when you consider they Built it so bloody cheaply,infact even the undercase is made from Vinyl covered Chipboard???Pretty bad Quality considering it was a Flagship VA

The SH201 I would say is probably better built Quality overall even though its plastic,its a third of the price of a New JP8K,but obviously lacks some of its features,Not sure what Prices elsewhere are but you certainly can get a used JP8K for less than a New SH201,average 2nd hand prices for a JP8K seem to vary between (£275-£350),although the SH201 prices seemed to have dropped a little in the UK.


Does anyone know well the Supersaw in the V synth GT stands up to the JP8K one,I'm interested in the V synth and would like to see how it sounds in comparison,and perhaps remove the JP8K from the setup,and replace it with the V synth as I have both the Rack and the Synth versions of the JP8K anyway

Nah. I don't think that there's any Jupiter in the JP-8K at all.
I would say that if you can't afford (or wanna pay for) a Jupiter 8 then check out the Juno 6/60, JX8P or even Jupiter 6. Those - especially the JX8P is something that I would consider to be a poor mans Jupiter 8 today. It does sound more like a JP-6 in a way. But when the chorus is on it has a JP-8 feeling me thinks. Very underrated synth.

Sound is subjective of course. I've heard JP-8K users that compare it with the Juno synths.

"They" say that the VA section of the V-synths are identical to the SH201, so that is a poor answer

I will always prefer my nord over the 201, mostly because the Nord acts more like I want, I just think it's easier to create those classic sounds. I especially prefer the 201 for trance stuff with reverb which means my banks are full of that kind of stuff and it sounds perfectly for that.
The built quality of the 201 is good enough but far from the same as a Nord, however the knobs feels better than what you expect.
A strange thing I noticed about my 201 is that one of the corners of the casing looks melted or wrenched. It is stable if you place it on a table and you won't notice it unless you watch it from specific angles, anyway look at this:

I kind of think the same, but I have never really been too facinated about customized synths and circuit bending.

Those knobs just before the wheels... Not sure about it but well... Good job anyway!

I would've put them above the wheels... aren't they a major itch in the ass when you do some wild soloing?

Yeah I wanted to put em there but there is no place because of wheels connections etc Anyway there is no problem with using wheels and knobs at the same time

The metal black panel that contains the wheels, could you have not turned that panel the other way up so the wider part (which is currently at the bottom) be at the top, then switch the wheels over?
