But THIS area of the forum IS dedicated to covers and those that take interest in them for what they are - nothing more, nothing less. To those who might think people who make covers are talentless, I'll stand my own original compositions up against their's any day.

Replica covers are a test in sound creation and synth programming, coming as close as possible to the specific timbres. They are also a good way to develop technical skills.

They are a thorough test on the ear. As we all know, the available scores for any Jarre tracks are terribly limited - even WFC. Even the most minimal albums like Oxygene have at least 8 individual elements.

They are also a test on the speed of the brain - learning to follow intricate sequences note by note, unpicking them, recognising loop-points and different time signatures and transcribing them perfectly considering individual velocity and note duration.

I agree with all this a 101%. And I like how you've elaborated on the process, which by no means is at all easy. That's why I said they're a fun tool (for newbies), because not only do you learn all kinds of techical knowledge when you do 'em, but you become more confident in yourself to be able to handle all the things required of you in this biz.

As to the talentless, I put that in because I knew it would be misunderstood, refer to my last post in that thread to see who I meant, I never meant us.

I think he's trying to say that those with lack of ability to write their own material,or lack of being able to create something of their own due to little experience or knowledge of constructing songs,can use the Covers as a way of gaining some kind of experience and musical understanding.
To produce a decent cover does take a degree of talent,not necessarily playing ability,but a good ear and attention to detail and anyone who can produce a half decent carbon copy I have an immense sense of Respect for their ability,especially when you can hear that they simply didn't rip a Midifile sequence for the Tracks,constructing the song from the groundup rather than prefabricated material.

Its also a good way to get under the sheets with Jarre's music,and help gain a good understanding of how he put things together.

I have no time for covers these days,I've been in a DM covers band back in the mid 90s and also done many JMJ covers but these were mostly during my early years of musical education,and were mostly done for fun,rather than a little income,they helped me immensly to understand synthesis and musical production and gain a large Appreciation of the Music I covered,and gave me a thirst for wanting to make music more than simply for a Hobby,nowadays time is money so I'm focused more onto my own musical output these days the majority of which is session work and sound engineering plus writing for other people or co-writing.
I dare say this time I spent learning to construct songs and making replicas of Artists,helped me on my Journey to what I know now and without that would perhaps not have so much Synthesis or Engineering knowledge.

Well spoken once again. I always thought breaking down excisting tracks is a good way to learn how a track can be pulled together, but also to learn how synthesis works for instance. It's not very original, but who cares anyway... it's a good first step on the stairs.

If you, or anyone else, are doing other covers from Oxy 7-13, howabout Oxy 11 or Oxy 12? I don't think I've heard any really good covers of them yet...

Shame the File is no longer availible,I'll see if I still have the Audio for part 12 and I also did Part 7 too,certainly don't have time to rework on the sequences as I would have to utilise newer instruments for Part 12 as I only have the NL1 synth nowadays,and I don't have an awful lot of spare time to do them justice at the moment.

Infact I'd like to make a request for a cover that doesn't seem to have appeared on this section, and that would be the 3rd section of Magnetic Fields 1
