Ah, I get it... it's much like the Magnetic Fields cucumber sound then.

You should have stated that earlier then. Now it just looks like "ohh shit I said something stupid so I better say it was just sarcasm"

Perhaps I should change the title of this thread to "The Art of Cucumber Sound"
FFS can we please get back on topic?
Equinoxe bro, you've gotta a 310, can your eternal "1/2 a page long posts" wisdom shed some light on the question?

I'm not sure what sort of Knowledge your trying to Attain in terms of "SE settings" for the E310,the sounds themselves are all the same,You can only alter the Sustain and the Footage/Octave
Oxygene/Equinoxe albums, its only really the 8' Setting and add the Sustain,The only time the 4' Setting is used is on Oxygene 13,doubled up with the 8'on the upper Manual,Its only really the External Modulation that alters the sound of the SE,You can lower the Volume of the Lower Manual strings as it has its own slider, you also have a button on the SE section which sets te Bass Pedals volume in proportion to the SE volume,(Basically acts like a Limiter to the Overall Bass against the SE) but other than that the Volume is set by the Swell Pedal which is a global Volume.
If your trying to replicate how Jarre would have set up the Organ,to play, well its a case of Common sense,And how you want to play it on the Organ,But you need to be able to route the given SE to modulation, which on a single Eminent is not possible to do,unless you have some form of seperate out To be able to send the Upper and Lower sections to there own Output/FX,
Here's How I would have set the Eminent up.
Oxygene 1,Lower Manual 8+Sustain(Main Pad+Phaser) Upper Manual 8+Sustain(Fading single string+Phaser)
Oxygene 2, 8'+Sustain(Lower or Upper Manual)Obviously lower Manual,if you want the Plucks on Upper Manual
Oxygene 4 ,Well I would set up same as Oxygene 1, with Upper manual playing counter Lead Melody
Oxygene 6 Lower Manual 8+Sustain Playing lower string melody (Phaser) Upper Manual 8+Sustain/Main Pad Phaser)
Equinoxe 1 8'+Sustain Upper Manual/Bass Pedals
Equinoxe 2 Lower Manual 8+Sustain(Main Pad+Phaser) Upper Manual 8+Sustain/Phaser
Equinoxe 4 Lower Manual 8'/Tape delay-Upper Manual Plucks percussion "On"+Delay
Equinoxe 7-8'+Sustain Upper/Lower Manual
If your trying to Replicate it on That 310 VST it Just simply Trial and error and Common sense judgement, but you have more flexibility than wit hthe 310 Organ with what you can do with the routing of it.

That it, that's exactly it, that's precisely what I was asking. Thank you for that fine and comprehensive post Equinoxe. You've exceeded my expectations in places.
No, I'm not trying to recreate that on the Eminent Reaktor ensemble, that is a fine ensemble but lacks the authenticity.
After having purchased GForce's VSM a couple of months ago, I've finally been able to sit down with it, and start playing around with all the different strings. I used Nostalgia and Kontakt up to this time for all the string synth strings, but VSM takes it up a notch or 3.
In VSM they sampled the Eminent strings, Upper and Lower Manual, 4' and 8', as well as Upper 16'.
So I was trying to document the settings for, you know, future use, be it myself or anyone else who needed them.
Experimenting with the Upper manual, which seems to be less raw, more smooth, I'd say that I rather fancy the Upper 4' for the Oxygene 2 strings over the Upper 8' or any of the Lower Manual settings. Same goes for Equinoxe 4, which seems to be Oxy 2's sister track.
For Oxygene 3 strings I'd say he used Lower 8' for the Cm4 chord + bass pedal.
For Oxygene 8 phased strings, 8' Lower Manual
For Equinoxe IV on the CiC album, I'd say he used Lower 4' with some eq.
For Rendez-Vous 2, Lower 8'
For Rendez-Vous 6, Lower 8'
There's also two cases where he uses strings just to fill up the high frequency content of a track, namely Oxygene 2's entire beginning sequence until 0:40, and in Equinoxe 3.
With O2 I think it's either Lower 8' or Lower 4'
With E3, it could be Upper 4'.

4' or 8' on either Manual is no different, the Waveform sounds the same, the Upper or lower manuals have no difference in timbre,It may sound different on your VST because its samples, when you say they also sampled a 16' setting ...Off where???the only sound which has the 16' is the Subbass Tab which is for the Pedals(Equinoxe 1 +Phaser)So if they have a 16' sample they must have sampled that from another Eminent with the SE,the 310 most certainly doesn't have a 16' octave setting for the SE
The only difference between selecting 4 or 8 footage for the SE is that you simply play the Jarre Parts an Octave lower if you selected the 4' setting on its own and in the case of selecting both together you get a Pitch shifted sound(Oxygene 13 second Verse) with the 4' adding a note an octave higher to whatever note your playing with the 8' selection,Jarre Most certainly had the 8' for the Oxygene 2 strings during the Oxygene tour(97)as he was playing the top most octave on the Upper manual for the strings,You get the same results with either setting,Lower or upper, just play Octave lower down for 4'
The sustain selector can also be used on its own its simply a Ghost part of the 8' at a lower volume with a simple "Release"of the note,if you play either the 8' or 4' without sustain you get a simple Note on when pressed and immediate note off with no release/Sustain when off,Kind of like a standard Organ On/Off envelope
The only benefit of the 4' setting on solo is that its basically like transposing the keyboard so you get access to a further couple of octaves above the Physical Keyboard range on the Upper Manual, the same with the Lower,if you choose 8' you get an extra octave on the lower end than if you chose 4'
the SE covers a 5 Octave range from the Lowest F (8' setting on the Lower manual) to the Highest F on the Upper Manual (4' setting on Upper Manual)
With the Actual Organ there is no right or wrong settings It what your more comfortable playing and how you want to voice the Songs on either upper or lower.

Alright, that is interesting, because here the Upper manual samples are definitely missing some higher frequency content.
I understand what you are saying about extending your playing beyond the keyboard range, but I think I'm hearing a difference in timbre as well, at least on the VSTi.
That's what I wanted to verify -as in how authentic a job GForce did with VSM.
Here listen to these samples I've recorded:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/zk8jv7
There's variations between the 4' and the 8' on the same manual, when playing the same chord.
So I guess they manipulated the samples in post production, to the detriment of authenticity.

a bit offtopic
can somebody make examples of pe2000 sound used in VSM?

PE-2000 examples:
I've done some dry examples and then some with the onboard ensemble. (The ensemble is adjustable, I pushed it halfway in this case). No other effects used, other than ensemble in places.
Strings 1:
http://rapidshare.com/files/111023226/S ... 1.mp3.html
Strings 2:
http://rapidshare.com/files/111024164/S ... 2.mp3.html
There's some crackling on the Strings 2 example, because I'm adjusting the amount of ensemble detune during play.

hello guys, i'm interesting with this thread, i don't have a Eminent 310U but i really enjoy the VST with Reaktor, anybody here make modifications to this string ensemble? to make the most perfect emulation of the Oxygene and Equinoxe...
Thank's!

You're interesting or interested?
Anyway, you'll get close using that Reaktor ensemble but you need to eq alot.

Well. The waveforms in this VST were sampled using mine 310U

the sounds on the VST I discovered came from your Eminent ?

The programmist has programmed virtual oscillators that based on those waveforms or so

maybe sound is not 100% coz chorus is programmed virtually
