Dunno, but it's a lot more back then than today, that's for sure. :P

Indeed at the time these synth's where very expansive. £1000, was a huge price those days. And not cheap at all.

All synth's in the 70's where expansive. Don't forget, a synthesiser was a high-tech instrument. And only made for professionals. (studio's, musician's, movie industry,...)
You can not compare it like today. Everybody can buy a synthesiser today, because now synth's are cheap and more user-friendly, compared with the 70's.

It's also pretty cheap in compare to what the cost brand new today.

But...the economy has changed since then. How much is £1000 in 1970 value worth today?
the Best way to work out Monetary values of past decades is to compare it against Monetary values of average Earnings of the time in which case the average salary per Annum was around £1150 in 1970,but again like todays wage, not everyone earns the average salary

£1000 in monetary values in 1970 would be the equivilant Value of paying £19,444.87 today.

Which puts the price of a Synth out of the reach of the average person in 1970 even Jarre as a student,I dare say based on those monetary values when you consider things like the Jupiter 8 in the 80s were around £4 Grand over a decade later and the Synclavier and Fairlight reached into tens of thousands on their RRP they weren't bought by a man working in a factory earning £50 a week

the Price of a Moog was the same as your average Annual salary in 1970,the ARP2600 also cost £1350 on release,as for the VCS the price was £330($825 USD),so whoever added that addition of the price on wikipedia has got their info wrong,The thing with "thickipedia" is it can be altered and randomly entered by anyone so I never take that as gospel on that site half the info is cooked

so they were savoured for the rich and famous..

Today no synth would cost you £20k on the average market or a years salary, because technology is far cheaper and easier to manufacture, when you see what we have today in terms of features and functions on a synth costing a third of the orginal price of the mini Moog, could you imagine paying £20k now for a synth like the Minimoog???Blimey you can kit yourself out with a studio for that..

Not so cheap then... :)

Well, then he either rent them, robbed a rich dude or his daddy paid the bill. Still amazing that a student could use the same synth as big rock acts such as Pink Floyd and The Who.
