Any chance for a translation for the poor Americans out here that only learn to speak/write one language

Okay, okay, but next time, learn french, doh :P

Virus KC Tuto :

Reproduction of the sequence of Chants Magnétiques Part 1 :
Excerpt : Original Sequence

Introduction :

You need to keep in mind that the perfect reproduction doesn't exist, each instrument has its own tune and its own sound touch almost given thanks to the filter, the stability of the VCOs and the quality of envelopes.
So, same parameters between two different synths won't give (for most of them) same results.
It's really impossible to have the same heat of the sound of an ARP 2600 with a Virus KC for example.

Midi Sequence :MIDI Sequence

Description of the patch :

VCO-1 :

Wave almost square
(still remains a bit of triangular component)

DEMO VCO1

VCO-2 :

Triangular wave (TRI)
Detune : 50%
Semie Tone : one octave up
SYNC : ON
(VCO-2 is synchronised on the period of the first)

DEMO VCO2

DEMO VCO1 and VCO2
(rem : you need to bring the VCO1 out in the parameters of the balance)

Image

VCO-3 :

Slave of VCO-2 (as VCO-2 = triangular)
Permits to make the sound fatter and richer.

DEMO VCO1, VCO2 and VCO3

Image

(The add of VCO3 is a real must, you make the harmonics warmer, the sound becomes interessant)

AMP Enveloppe :

Attack:9;Decay:61;Sustain:71;Release:0
(min value : 0 ; max value : 127)

Filter Enveloppe :

Attack:10;Decay:40;Sustain:0;Release:127
(min value : 0 ; max value : 127)

Filter LP :

Enveloppe Amount : 61%
Cut-Off : 39%

Modulation Matrix :

KeyFollow of 9% modulates the Cut-Off

The KeyFollow is a value changing in a linear way from the low to the high of the keyboard.
We want here with a Cut-Off to have a lightness of the sound more elevated in the high part of the keyboard.
This result in brighter notes in the high part of the keyboard and more muffled in the low part.

Mod Wheel of 10% modulates the Cut-Off

Could have been any other controller, here we can change the value of the Cut-Off with the modulation wheel, on the midi given in this post, the values of the wheel are different for each note. The sequence is richer and it has a huge influence on the quality of the echoes.
We limit a lot the unpleasant effects of recovering of identical notes.
JM Jarre metuculously choosed the values of Cut-Off in fonction of the echo for the whole thing to make a global sounding thing and not a sequence and echoes we could distinguish too much.

Other :

The legato is activated, if two notes are recovered, the envelope of the second note is not activated again (as the Minimoog).

Result :

Dry sequence

Sequence with echo (4)

I may have done some mistakes, if you don't clearly understand one part, just ask me to translate it again with other words ;)

So is that nice or what Fischek ;) Your NL only has 2 oscs... :fine:

Yes, and my JP8k aswell, that's why I feel a bit pwned there :punch:

So the original sequence is from the ARP? :nico:
I guess I have always said to myself that it was the Oberheim :P

I think you can find an alternative because the original sequence has been programmed on Kobol Racks that have only 2VCO.

When I programmed the sound sequence, I edited original sound on a waveeditor called "Wavelab" and I analyzed the sound signal in the way to have the same waveform (shown on tutorial) on Virus KC.

The closest result used 3VCO but on others synthesizers you may need only 2VCO.

Work with your ears first.

Didn't JMJ also use the Expander which has an additional VCO?

The thing is I am buying the Virus TI so I am not that worried :) The only question is when exactly, but I've made up my mind (the Korg TR will probably have to go though).

I'd keep that if I were you... a ROMpler is always good to have for basic sounds like pianos and strings...

Yes, but choosing between letting a NL or a TR go, I'd choose the TR to leave, without doubt
The Ti is good, but IMHO as Gert said, you should keep a ROMpler added to all, or at least not the TR but a little one, like a XP30 for example, but that's only my opinion ;)

But that is ofcourse a matter of opinion. I like the thought about having a ROMpler for those basic like sounds, but I doubt I would use them anyway, so can it be to other people 8)

I can't say I understand what exactly would the osciloscope prove. That the stuff you have is good and the rest of the stuff is bad? :D Anyway, have a look at this tutorial since it seems you have the MS2000 http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/2007/08 ... -drum.html

I'd like to keep the TR too, but I can't have it all - I hate the thought of selling any keyboard because I know I will miss it for some reason - you know the story *every* keyboard is good for something.

On the other hand, I'd like to have the Virus very much, so I'm making the choice - that's all. I hope I'll be able to get by with a soft synth for the piano sound - we'll see.

Have to go to Greece now - see ya in 10 days! :)
