Well, I'm not saying he used a sequencer on Oxygene. At least, I meant to say that he most likely used the Matrisequencer in stead of the ARP sequencer on Equinoxe. Still, I can't believe that he didn't use sequencers on Oxygene. Some things are just sounding too synchronised, for example the Oxygene 2 sequence (from the start) or the Oxygene 4 sequence (the staccato one)... either JM's able to play perfectly in sync or he used tape loops, another possibility...

Yeah, tape loops! :? People keep mentioning that on many forums....

But if he did have a sequencer - Which one out of the two would you use knowing both inside out?

Would it be possible for him to have done that Oxygene 2 beginning sequence on the RMI?

I don't know the RMI too well, you would have to ask Johan (LeoDav)...

But as far as I can see, it's not really a sequencer on the RMI but rather an arpeggiator. And if it's just an ordinary arpeggiator, there's no way of doing that Oxygene 2 sequence with it. Simply because it has different notes when running up and down... ;)

Ox2 sequence isn't impossible to play synched at all!

Yeah that's what I was thinking, but do you think he could have achieved the timbre alone and used an outside sequencer for the notes! To me that sequence sounds extremely clean and punchy and sharp - hallmarks of a digital synth.

He hasn't been able to reproduce that square wave sequence since recording Oxygene, that could mean it was done on the RMI which was connected to an out side seq?

I still can't imagine how he could make Oxygene with no sequencers except for that up mode arp on the RMI.

It is. You can never play as accurate as a sequencer, you'll always have to deal with manual inaccuracy. Sure it's possible to play along in the same tempo, but nowhere as tight as on the record.

When hearing that sound, I don't necessarily think about a digital synth. I think you can do that with a 2600 as well. As for connecting the RMI to an external sequencer, I don't know. I don't know about the connections of the RMI at all. Perhaps JM's was midified, or perhaps it's fitted with CV/Gate connections? Can't say...

Ofcourse, nobody can play as accurate as a sequencer, but if you have a good drumtrack or metronome, it isn't impossible at all! I think JMJ played this manual.

Vince Clarke has some theories about sequencers.

Sorry, but who is Vince Clarck?

Have you ever heard about Depeche Mode, Yazoo or Erasure?

I've heard of them, but I don't know too much of their music.

Yazoo and Erasure sounds pretty similar. Maybe because the demale singer from Yazoo sounds like a man or the male singer from Erasure sounds like a woman.

Anyway, shall we keep this ontopic? :P But you can check the names out on youtube for instance.

Listen carefully.
Equinoxe 1 was played manually, for example. Compare them and you'll hear what I mean.

Since I'm new to the site, I haven't still read all the past "interesting" topics, but have you ever heard anyone on here recreate that sound perfectly, in any covers/experiments?
