Forget about Cubase SX and the compressor.
If you want a legal Cubase, go for the Studio or Elements edition then. I'm sure you won't use 80% of the functions of SX (do you ever use 5.1/7.1 mixing, 32bits Dithering, 3 separate mixers, or a separate "studio room matrix monitor mixer"? Even I don't, so I guess you won't at all :')). So that would be an enormous waste of money, imho.
About the compressor, it's a nice fairy-tale that says that a good hardware compressor will make your music sound better. But it doesn't, at this scale. Even the most free VST-compressors will beat compressors to €500 in soundquality, easily. Second, the parameters of both the VST and hardware compressor are exactly the same, so it's not a matter of which compressor you use, but a matter of how you make the settings! There is not such a thing as "the magic compressor that makes everything sound wonderful". Moreover, note that every cable and DA/AD-conversion causes loss on soundquality!

For the pre-amps, they are misleading mostly. Up to €500, they don't add anything special to your sound, and the first really noticable improvements start from €1000... So be careful for 300 bucks pre-amps that scream "Real tubes inside!" or "That fat 70's sound".

For some real quality VST-effects (compressors, delays, reverbs, anything you need, actually) I would recommend you the Native Instruments Waves bundle, and a pair of good studio-monitors. Altough it doesn't look as sexy as a rack full of hardware, it will improve your sound a lot more than investing your money in stuff like expensive compressors, pre-amps, reverbs, or whatever...

Totally agreed. Except for the hardware compressor. You can get some pretty good ones for a fair price and I personally prefer hardware. Not to say that software can't do the trick, most certainly - but hardware can be good. Still it's in the settings - you can easily screw up if you don't know what you are doing.

I have explored the new one on their website and I think with this new version that it is beginning to be a little bit more better. Finally a better sequencer. The old sequencer of Reason 3 was like crap. The new synth Thor looks very nice. I wonder if it sounds just as nice as it looks like
