Equinoxe wrote:it must be a case of your own taste and hearing, the Voyager clearly is by far more fuller and aggresive in its sound, and also able to sound soft and mellow too,I've got the two to be able to A/B Comparison and would say anyone could hear the Difference the only thing that makes the Phatty sound large is the fact it has the Overdrive option to be able to push the sound a little more to make it harsh or fuller and personally think it needs it to compete with the Voyager, emulating timbres on each machine shows that the Voyager has far more fuller and larger tones and thats not just because it has the 3rd oscillator, even with 1 or 2 oscillator replications the Voyager has more of that Model D signature sound whereas the Phatty plays less harder.
I know that I'm not alone thinking that the LP sounds closer to the Model D than the Voyager. But it's a stupid choice anyway since both of them are doing more excellent Model-D sounds than anything else out there. It's a really really close call.
I have A & B a Moog LP with a Model D and was very impressed with how close the LP could sound to it's elder brother. As long as I made 2 VCO patches of course! It did lack some of the punch and bass of the D. But it had no problems to keep up when I programmed the classic Minimoog stuff on them both.
I really wish that I had a Voyager as well back then.
Equinoxe wrote:Anyone who wants that Original Model D would mainly want it for its Nostalgic status and legendary name more than wanting it simply for the Sound alone, and those who wouldn't settle for anything less than the Minimoog would be willing to pay the Price of service and upkeep, not me thanks
Me neither thanks! :) I think that today many people want a MM just for the prestige in owning one. But I know that many people, including me, thinks that the MM is a unique sounding synth. One oscillator patches sound so fat and big. I have yet to hear a monosynth that's capable of doing that. Other Moog synths, especially the Micromoog, come close - closer than anything else. But the Mini is still special. It is that punch - pure magic.

But to be totally fair. You can't hear that when you put in a good mix on a CD or - even more horrible - a Mp3.
Equinoxe wrote:if you want a synth with that typical MiniMoog sound there are cheaper and More reliable viable options like those Creamware and SE1 imitations, the Phatty and the Voyager...both siblings of the Moog signature, are not 3rd party emulators...
To me thats not a replacement or second best options its a Moog synth in its own right, that just happens to emulate the Model D far more convincingly than anything else out there.
I agree. You won't get the exact sound. But it will be close enough. Unless you are a purist and have a fetisch to fix old broken gear - there's really no point in getting a Minimoog.
The Minimax has impressed me a lot. Finally a VA that can match the best of software. :)
But if you really want that Moog sound there are no alternatives. ;) Especially not now when there's a Voyager OS coming soon.

I have been a fan of the sound of the MM since the day I have heard what Klaus Schulze was doing with it for his amazing soli.
Now, my dream is to own such a synth :P

I have never seen oscillators that powerful !

.
Being a Model D owner for several years I'd like to add my 2 cents here...
First of all, unless you abandon your Model D in a moist cold garage collecting dust, I don't think it would give you more problems than an other synth or workstation.
Think of the Roland digital synth/workstations of the 90s... The backlight of LCDs completely faded, the buttons with the microswitches almost nonworking, the rubber contacts under the keyboard making troubles like no more velocity etc.
It can be more expensive to fix a D-70 or a JD-800 than a Minimoog! (and try to ask a D-70 owner if that is true!)
If you play an Analog synth regularly, you cover it when you don't play it and leave it in a safe environment you can get from it several years of "trusty collaboration"

As to the sound I never compared a Model D with a Voyager. I played the Voyager in a shop and heard a Voyager rack in a studio and they are for sure first class synths. Very interesting was the SoundOnSound article from Gordon Reid
The purists may tell you that even the first 10,000 Minimoogs Model D sound better than the last production units, because of the oscillator board change since serial number 10175...
Anyway to me it's limiting to consider The Voyager and the Little Phatty just emulations of the good old-legendary Model D.
They are modern analog monosynths, and they excel in that. They offer more in terms of features than the 70's model.

Another crucial point is what happens to the sound when you convert it in the digital domain. I was impressed when I plugged the MINI into a digital effects processor to quickly add a delay. The sound immediately became a "fraction" of what it was in the analog domain.
The converters are so important, especially when you have open sounds with lots of harmonics. Even a decent soundcard like the MOTU 828 mkI lost the magic of "that" sound when I recorded it at 44.1/24 bit. So very good converters are recommended when you need to capture a so large sound.

My last point is about the price. Someone is selling the original Model D at insane prices.
But if you are not afraid of buying them from the US, considering the Dollar/EUR/Pound change it may be worth the risk of a worldwide shipment.
I paid mine a lot less than a Voyager few years ago.

As i said before, i have not enough enough money to buy a vintage.

So i decided to buy a new master keyboard : The Edirol PCR-800
Because I'm mostly working with soft synth, i think this controler is the best choice for me.

Some Pictures here

Actually i use a poor Yamaha home keyboard as MIDI controler, but it's very limited...
