Jean Michel Jarre is an icon of electronic music and a visionary artist who has been turning concerts into spectacles of sound, light and technology for decades. His cult album Oxygene sold 18 million copies worldwide and took the artist to the top of the charts.
Jean Michel Jarre - when is the concert in Poland?
Jean Michel Jarre will arrive in Poland on June 19 this year. The artist emphasized that his return to our country is of particular importance to him, both professional and personal.
- It is a great excitement for me to return to Poland. This is a country that I loved very much at the beginning of my career, and even earlier. When I'm in Poland, I feel at home - he said.
The next concert in Poland is part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the events of June 1976, which is of particular importance to the artist.
- My mother was an important figure in the French resistance movement. I grew up believing that it was very important not to confuse ideology with people. In a sense, it has to do with the celebrations in Radom, with the breaking of chains - he said.
"Oxygene". A leash album that changed electronic music
The release of the 1976 album "Oxygene" turned out to be one of the most important moments in Jean-Michel Jarre's career, although its beginnings were not at all obvious, because the project was completely non-standard at that time. The lack of vocals, the lack of classical drums and songs in the radio format caused many labels to reject the material.
- The beginning of the album is the sound of the wind, something like white noise. People thought it was a production error. And then they understood that it was not the manufacturer's mistake, but my fault," he said.
One of the symbolic moments that influenced the sale of the album "Oxygene" was when Elton John bought several copies of it in a music store on the Champs-Elysées.
Jean Michel Jarre and his "kitchen of sounds"
Jarre has also been famous for his technological and stage experiments for years. As he emphasized, he was always attracted to projects that went beyond the standard forms of concerts.
- I think I'm such a naughty boy. I'm always attracted to things that are not necessarily easy, but exciting. That's why I'm always looking for new tools, new toys to experiment with. I created my own avatar about 10-12 years ago to perform in the metaverse. And it's a really amazing feeling when you're in the virtual cathedral of Notre Dame, for example, or in the virtual palace of Versailles and sending your digital twin to the world of imagination. Recently I was in China and I met people who create holograms. And suddenly they made me talk to myself when I was 25. And that's magical," he added.
Finally, the artist invited our reporter to his studio, which he calls - the kitchen of sounds.
- I've always thought electronic music was a bit like cooking. I come from Lyon, which is the capital of cuisine in France. Working with sound and texture is very similar to cooking. DJs are also standing by the oven, cooking frequencies and sounds. For now, there is chaos here, but that is the purpose of this place. Have a lot of different instruments and test, try new things. I will have something special in Radom. A small camera in glasses, so I will invite people to my kitchen - he concluded.
