Although it doesn't bother me at all, JD800's polyphony is (said to) be limited too... so does that suit for pads or what?

When using one layer, yes. But the best pads (and sounds in general) are made up of more layers. Using all layers (4), the polyphony is limited to something like 4-6 voices, don't know exactly. (it was never a problem for me)

you should buy jv1080/2080 [64 voices] or jv 90/1000 [polyphony expandable to 56 voices]
btw listen to some srjv demos... really rocks

I CAN GET A ROLAND JV80 FOR £149 OR A JV1080 FOR £200 SO MAYBE JD800 AND ONE OF THESE BUT WHICH ONE

JV1080 and JD800 can do similar sounds, although the JD800 is much faster to edit the sounds. Actually, I had a JD800 and an XP80 (= JV1080 sounds) and I sold the JD800 because they were covering the same grounds.
The only reasons why I could have kept the JD800: the filters sound a bit warmer and it has different internal samples (but some similar samples as well).
But the XP80 can do the same things (similar LFO's and envelopes, but still with more editable parameters) plus stereo panning of individual waveforms. For exemple on the JD800 you can't make a single patch with a string sound on the left and a choir on the right. Everything's in the center, yet you can have stereo results with stereo effects such as chorus (and maybe with LFOs but I'm not sure at all).
I've been using the XP80 since 1997 so I have no problem to edit the sounds quickly. That's why I sold the JD800.
Actually, the JV/XP synths are updated versions of the JD800, but with new samples, more programming possibilities, but without all the sliders. I liked my XP80 better than the JD800.

Someone mentioned Oberheim. With your left over money you can pick up a Matrix1000. 6 voices each with two DCO's. Those puppies use Curtis chips no VA under the hood, those are real analog oscillators (digitally controlled). They are dirt cheap, just bought one on EBay for $250US. They're great for pads but programming can only be done via computer. Lots of bang for your buck if you have the extra money.

Yes, the Matrix6 seems to be good.
If I have the money one day, I'll maybe buy one, to have an Oberheim in my studio
